Princess Ahira, by K. M. Shea

Getting kidnapped by dragons on her sixteenth birthday was the best thing that ever happened to Princess Ahira.

After spending her life avoiding lectures and lessons, Ahira is thrilled when she is kidnapped and selected to be a live-in-princess (Read: Servant) for a powerful dragon named Azmaveth. However, there are a few things in her new life that Ahira would rather do without. There’s Kohath, Azmaveth’s infuriating human steward; Azmaveth’s tendency to mis-make magic spells; Kohath; the ongoing epic battle between the dragons and the Valkyrie, magical warriors bent on destruction; and Kohath.

But Ahira should have known better than to hope for a happily ever after. When the dragons realize Azmaveth has unwittingly put their future in Ahira’s hands, she is ripped from her new home and returned to her country. If Ahira wants her happy ending, she’ll have to fight for it.

PRINCESS AHIRA is a sweet fairy tale romance. Brimming with dragons, unicorns, and wizards, it is a stand-alone adventure filled with witty characters and magical-mishaps.

Once Upon A Time, Dragons Used To Kidnap Princesses
By StormyWolf
Read my full review at The Wolf's Den:[...]

I was kinda excited to read it after the description brought back memories of one of my favorite childhood stories, Patricia C. Wrede's Dealing With Dragons. With nontraditional princesses, intelligent dragons, and a few fairytale throwbacks, I eagerly dove in.

And soon wished I had just re-read Dealing With Dragons.

Overall, Princess Ahira was a cute story, but I found it sorely lacking. If you enjoy rebel heroines, cutesy fantasy, or are looking for a fluff story for a younger reader, then you might give it a try. No language or sex, and extremely mild violence sits this in the perfect range for middle grade readers. While I had a hard time getting over my own nostalgic expectations, a new reader may find this story much more enjoyable, so if you're at all curious about Princess Ahira, I'd say definitely download the free sample and see for yourself.

A Fun Goof
By Pop Bop
So, how do you approach this dilemma? It's free or almost free, it has charm and high energy, and it's a goofy fun read. It is also poorly edited and formatted, with lots of typos and some grammatical errors. Luckily, it isn't loaded with improperly used "big words" that demonstrate that the author has access to a thesaurus but has no idea what many words mean. I say "luckily" because that is a deal killer for me. As to the rest, I wouldn't assign this as required reading for students learning to use English properly, but I'm willing to bet that most adults could be exposed to such a poorly edited book and not lose their command of the language.

In other words, I come out on the side of "read it!".

Princess Ahira is snarky, but funny snarky and pretty decent-hearted to boot. Her dragon is elegant, charming and appealing. Secondary characters are lovably quirky. The love interest is dreamy and the romance angle is pretty much written as a bit of a mock on teen romances, (which I'm happy to assume is intentional). There are lots of funny non-girly spunky princesses out there in new books right now, and in fact lots of them are engaged in frustrating, upsetting and ultimately bonding with their confused dragons, but it seems to me that there's always room for one more in the pool. Especially if, as here, there is a high level of cheerful good-natured goofy fun.

Please note that I found this book while browsing Amazon Kindle freebies. I have no connection at all to either the author or the publisher of this book.

Princess and Dragons!
By Sara
The basic description of the book makes it sound like Dealing with Dragons (by Patricia Wrede) but other then the fact that it has some of the same magical creatures/beings and it stars a dragon and a fiery princess there are almost zero similarities. Most books with dragons as a main character make them the human-eating kind or with strange personalities. I am happy to say that this story makes sure that the dragons have distinct personalities, some of which are "traditional" dragon-like and others are very much human like. Ahira was perhaps a little too bossy and her mood swings gave me whiplash a few times, but there were some fantastic one liners in this book, and I definitely liked it better then any other teenager princess stories I've read.
