Homecoming Ranch (Pine River Book 1), by Julia London

New York Times and USA Today bestselling author Julia London launches a triumphant, emotional, heartwarming story about finding love, family and home.

Madeline Pruett has made up for a lonely childhood and being raised by an irresponsible single mom by creating a solitary world where timetables and highlighters are essential for the predictability she craves. But Madeline is shocked out of her carefully constructed life by word that a father she never knew has died and left her an inheritance and, surprisingly, two unknown sisters. Madeline hopes that she can fly to Colorado, meet her sisters, discover her inheritance, and return to Orlando in a few days to close the biggest deal of her budding real estate career and get back to what she knows best: a quiet life.

For years, Luke Kendrick has juggled school and career and rescuing his family from illness, death and financial crisis. But he has never lost sight of his goals: building and selling his own dream homes. Just when it seems that dream might finally materialize, Luke is called home to Pine River, Colorado to reclaim the ranch his father lost in a gentlemen’s agreement. He is not surprised—Luke’s family knows he will put his life on hold to rescue them...again. But Luke is surprised by a sexy yet uptight button-up woman in impractical shoes who thinks his ranch now belongs to her.

Madeline isn’t sure how to put order to a sprawling, rundown ranch, not to mention a pair of sisters who are nothing like what she imagined or hoped them to be. The only thing she’s sure of is that careful planning is useless in a place where roads have names like Sometimes Pass and men as ruggedly handsome as Luke Kendrick behave so unpredictably.

As Luke and Madeline go toe to toe over the future of the ranch, sparks fly as hot and fiery as their kisses. Madeline thinks she’s the expert, but it’s Luke who teaches her a thing or two—about breaking down walls, finding home, and the true meaning of family.

From Publishers Weekly
In the first of the Pine River contemporary trilogy from bestseller London (The Year of Living Scandalously), "control freak" Florida realtor Madeline Pruett learns that she and two stepsisters she didn't know existed have inherited a Colorado ranch from her father, Grant Tyler, a man she never knew. Summoning all her courage, she goes to the ranch to meet Libby and Emma. Denver architect Luke Kendrick and his brother, Leo, grew up on the ranch, but their dad sold it cheaply to Grant to pay for Leo's medical bills, with a handshake agreement that he could buy it back for the same low price. Luke wants the ranch back; Madeline wants to sell to the highest bidder; Emma wants to return to California; Libby wants to live at the ranch with her sisters. Throw in a family-reunion moneymaking scheme, Luke's ex-girlfriend, and Madeline's current boyfriend, and there are plenty of obstacles between Luke, who's been burned before, and Madeline, who has serious trust issues. Leo, a former football player disabled by seizures, carries the book as the occasional narrator.

From Booklist
A flat tire on her rented car leaves dressed-for-success realtor Madeline Pruett stranded on her way to Pine River, Colorado. The dad she never knew left her and two sisters she never knew she had equal shares in Homecoming Ranch. Architect Luke Kendrick, on his way to Pine River to find out why his dad and wheelchair-bound brother, Leo, are not living at the ranch that has been in the family for generations stops to help Madeline. They meet again as they try to unsnarl the financial and legal mess created when Madeline's father, trying to help his friend Leo with his medical expenses, bought the ranch. On top of that, things must be negotiated among the three sisters, who have nothing in common except for what they inherited: DNA, the ranch, and a contract to host a huge family reunion. London's multidimensional characters are warmly presented, and her portrayal of Leo as a sexy, interesting person is sensitive and appealing. Readers will be looking forward to seeing more of him in future novels. —Diana Tixier Herald

Review

Another Great story by Julia London!
By Nelle's NightStand
Homecoming Ranch is not your normal man meets woman, they fall in love, happily ever after story. This story is about Madeline Pruett and Luke Kendrick. Madeline is a semi-successful real estate agent in Florida who learns her "sperm donor" father, Grant Tyler left her a 1/3 of a ranch in Pine River, Colorado and two sisters she never knew she had. Luke is an up and coming custom builder in Denver, who comes home to help out his father and brother. Sparks flare when they first meet, but then Luke finds out that Madeline is one of Grant's heirs. Grant had swindled Luke's father out of the ranch that had been in their family for a couple generations.
The romance between Luke and Madeline has fits and starts. They each have past relationship issues and have a hard time with trust. One of the more powerful things Luke says to Madeline after finding out that she betrayed his trust, not with another man but with the ranch, is "Relationships, families-they come with lots of flaws and nothing is ever going to be perfect. And if you are going to stand around, hoping that all the kinks and hurt and messy stuff will go away, you'll never know the joy of any of it. You'll be waiting alone for a very long time." Having never had a family, just her alcoholic mother, Madeline has to come to terms with the messy emotions of being in a relationship.
All of this is told in brief commentary by Leo, Luke's younger brother. Leo is a riot! He developed Motor Neuron Disease and is in a wheelchair and feeding tube. He doesn't let that get to him though, he flirts and is so charismatic and funny. I can't wait for him to come back in the next Pine River books.

First of a new series
By H. Mitchell
This is the first in Julia London's latest contemporary trilogy. In this book we very briefly meet Grant Tyler just before he dies when he decides to leave Homecoming Ranch to his three daughters as a way of making up for the fact that he's been a lousy father. Only problem is that Homecoming Ranch is sort of not his to give and the three daughters all of mixed feelings about Grant and each other. This book is devoted to Madeline's story. Madeline has never had any interaction with Grant and has no idea she even has sisters so she has mixed feelings about her inheritance. Deciding just to go to Colorado long enough to sell the ranch, she plans on getting right back to her well ordered if boring life in Orlando. However, nothing goes according to plan which really confuses Madeline. Enter Luke Kendrick who feels that the ranch rightfully belongs to him, a sister that wants nothing to do with family and another sister that wants to keep the ranch. While the premise of this story was very good, I often had difficulty liking Madeline. She has some serious issues from childhood and often lashes out at everyone around her. Then she regrets her actions but never really changes. I think had Madeline been more likable, the story would have been better. That said though I am very much looking forward to the next two in the series because I want to know what is behind the strange actions of the other two sisters. I think their stories could be very intriguing.

Julia London does it, again!
By Kerry Croucier
Julia London has done it again. In her the first book of her contemporary Pine River Trilogy, "Homecoming Ranch," She introduces us to characters who draw us in and make us want to stay. Madeline Pruett is a tightly-controlled real estate agent in Florida. She grew up with her irresponsible and self-centered Mom, who changed boyfriends constantly. Her father was non-existent in her life, so she is shocked to find that he died and left her a share of a ranch in Colorado. She is even more shocked to find she has two sisters she never knew existed (they didn't know about her, either). This throws her well-ordered life into chaos. She travels to Colorado expecting to wrap everything up in 3 days...of course, you know nothing will work as expected. Once in Colorado, she hits one challenge after another, and meets Luke Kendrick. Luke, heading home to see what his Dad and brother have gotten into, this time, takes one look at Madeline with her highlighter, car manual, and flat tire, and instantly does what comes naturally, stops to help and there is instant attraction. Until he finds out that his father made a deal with Madeline's father to sell his family's ranch, in exchange for the money needed to pay for treatment his brother, Leo, needs. This pits Luke against Madeline, as he tries to find a way to "fix" this latest problem. Both Madeline and Luke find things don't go as they plan, and this is what draws us in. Leo is a wonderful character. He has Motor Neuron Disease which is horrible, but instead of becoming bitter, he is such a positive person. I love the chapters from his perspective. The interplay and animosity between Madeline and her new sisters, Libby and Emma, is believable. This is a wonderful story with believable main characters and challenges. The secondary characters and town have me ready to pack my car and move to Pine River, Colorado. I can't wait for the next book!
