In The Right Stuff: Interviews with Icons of the 1970s and 1980s, journalist, Explorers Club fellow and author James M. Clash has compiled 19 of his rare interviews with the scientists, athletes and explorers of the '70s and '80s who expanded our conception of the limits of mankind. Come and take a look back with us at this incredible era through interviews with the likes of astronaut Alan Bean, F1 driver Sir Jackie Stewart, the late Joe Frazier, Mario Andretti and many more.
"The 1960s, when I did my 102,800-ft. parachute jump, was a time of big change. But what many don't remember is that in the '70s, much of that technological development came to fruition. Eight of the twelve astronauts who walked on the moon did so in the 1970s. Jim Clash's book captures the spirit of that time period with insightful interviews of the big players."
- Joe Kittinger, author of Come Up and Get Me
"As a child of the '70s, I was inspired by many of the icons Jim Clash interviews in this book. The insights presented here into their pioneering efforts, feelings about their successes and failures and humility (or arrogance) along the way are fascinating to read. This book will surely make a welcome addition to the library of any explorer, history buff or adrenaline junkie."
- Josh Bernstein, Explorer & Educator
"When treating Beck Weathers [Into Thin Air] for frostbite on Everest, I came across a number of explorers in dicey situations. In his new book, Jim Clash captures the essence of such risk directly from the mouths of those who do it regularly — climbers, astronauts, boxers. No wannabes here. I recommend this gem to all my climber friends, especially the part about Dick Bass and Seven Summits."

14 iconic figures come alive
By Robert C. ross
James M. Clash is a fellow and director at The Explorers Club in New York City, who has compiled interviews with 14 scientists, athletes and explorers of the 1950s and 1960s. They include:
John Glenn First American to orbit the earth
Neil Armstrong First to walk on the moon
Joseph Kittinger Parachutist who jumped from 102,800 feet
Edmund Hillary First to summit Mount Everest
Buzz Aldrin Second to walk on the moon
Don Walsh First to dive to Earth's deepest point
Clash is the perfect interviewer for these adventurers; he has been called a modern day Hemingway willing to try the very feats his subjects have completed. Forbes To The Limits: Pushing Yourself to the Edge In Adventure and in Business written by Clash, for example, contains well written biographies that bring the subjects to life. Mario Andretti writes: "Jim Clash not only has the guts to drive an Indy race car at 200 m.p.h., but the skills as a writer to let us know what it feels like."
Clash's skills as an interviewer are on display here, as this extract from his interview with Scott Carpenter demonstrates:
You are considered the first astronaut/aquanaut, correct?
SC: I lived 200 feet under water for a month [Sealab II]. It was an underwater habitat, pressurized so it had an open hatch on the deck. Every day we worked on the ocean floor -- that's diver's work.
Is the feeling of weightlessness in water and space at all similar?
SC: It is subjective only, but there is a similarity. Unlike space, you can propel yourself [in water] with fins, but your heart doesn't know you are weightless -- it still feels one G.
Any envy when John Glenn went back to space in 1997 aboard the Shuttle?
SC: I told him I would be glad to stand by for him again [as Carpenter had done before Glenn's 1962 flight], but this time I'd make sure he broke his leg so I could go [laughs]. But then I said, "No, that won't work. NASA wouldn't want that, because I'm not old enough."
If you have any interest in people that recognized great challenges and met them, this book is essential reading.
