This is as much a story of evolution as an institution.
This is the story of the Marine Corps Mountain Warfare Training Center. MCMWTC was established due to lessons learned from the legendary Chosin Reservoir Campaign in North Korea during the winter of 19501951. Experiences there showed a pressing need for a training program to prepare Marines for the rigors of harsh winter combat. What started as a basic cold-weather indoctrination program for the replacement drafts bound for Korea evolved over time into a year-round training facility that is one-of-a-kind for the entire Department of Defense.

Charles P. Neimeyer is Director, History Division, United States Marine Corps, Quantico, Virgina. Previously he was Executive Director, Regent University, Washington, DC and before that Academic Dean as well as Professor of National Security Affairs at the Naval War College, and Professor of History at the U.S. Naval Academy. He is the author of numerous publications, including America Goes to War: A Social History of the Continental Army, 1775-1783.

The History of the Bridgeport or Pickle Meadows Mountain Warfare Center.

This is a well-written, detailed piece of history that will interest any reader that has undergone either the Battalion Mountain Summer or Winter Packages, the Rock Package, or the Mountain Leadership Course. What a great book. Anyone who has been involved will recall the sites mentioned, the Marines featured and the activities covered. One flaw that I did notice was that Chuck Connors was NOT a Marine (WWII Army) but merely portrayed a Marine in the movie mentioned in the book. Probably a typo or misunderstanding with the author. Bottom line: good book, not often available, and nice coverage of an often unknown segment of Marine Corps history.
