Abandoned in childhood in pre-Civil War Texas, Tom Patterson grows up tough, wily and, surprisingly good-natured. These traits serve him well as a conscript cavalryman in the Confederate Army. His courage in combat and his resourcefulness in dangerous situations earn the attention, admiration, and friendship of his sergeant, Ben Haley. Slightly older and more levelheaded, Ben is a big brother mentor to the impetuous Tom during the war, and afterwards, they continue as friends and partners.
Seeking new lives in the West, the two young men sign on with the Union Pacific. Serving as mounted guards, their duty is to protect construction workers on the transcontinental railroad from marauding Indians. With the battles of the war behind them, new and exciting adventures await as Tom and Ben face the many perils and the violence of the expanding frontier.

western lover
By Gus's Mom
This western is a prequel to Gunfighter's Apprentice, and like the other Tom Patterson westerns, it's a great read. I could hardly wait for it to come out, and when I got the book, I could hardly put it down. Mr. Drake's prose moves along at a good clip, and I kept reading because I was always wanting to know what would happen next. Mr. Drake's westerns are full of historical details of the period in which his stories are set, and I enjoy the added benefit of a painless history lesson. This author obviously does a lot of research to make sure his settings are authentic. Please, Mr. Drake, what happens to Tom and Betty and the boy after the end of Sierra Skullduggery? How about a movie from these Tom Patterson stores?

A Great Introduction to the Tom Patterson Western Series by Jessy S. Drake! Enjoy!
By Tom McGee
Longing for an entertaining book in the old west drama, I discovered Jerry S. Drakes, “Sierra Skullduggery,” a story that I thought I would enjoy. A couple days after ordering it, I noticed a review on amazon.com that suggests that for greater enjoyment and familiarization with the characters the customers should read The Gunfighter’s Apprentice first.

I took the reviewers advice, purchased the Kindle version and read The Gunfighter’s Apprentice and wait with anticipation for Sierra Skullduggery to arrive.

My first exposure to Jerry Drake was so entertaining, that I ordered the Kindle format of another of his western novels, “Breaking Trail” to read next.

I am glad that I ordered this one because it gave the early life and background for Tom Patterson.

Beginning in 1858 in Texas, we learn about Tommy Patterson tough life, living on his own at 7 or 8 years old doing whatever he needed to do to survive. There were those who abused him, others who took him in and others who influenced the man he would grown to be. In the school of hard knocks he learned to stand up for himself and fight of the bullies.

Unfortunately some of those bullies were connected to rich and influential parents, resulting in his choice between jail or joining the confederate army after successfully standing up to them.

Early on he met a fast gun entertainer who taught him a few gun play tricks that helped him later on in life.

During his service in the Civil War as a Confederate soldier, he met his best friend, Ben Haley, his Sergeant during the war, supervisor on the railroad, fellow construction worker later and Sheriff in another small town thereafter.

Younger than Ben, yet sometimes teacher to his mentor, the two of them were friends and partners until the very end.
The two survived many mishaps and shared fellow antagonists, one of which was Leon Biggs, one of the meanest sociopathic murderers in the confederate regime. Their long time nemesis plagued them during and after the war, but not the worst they would experience.

Falling on hard times, Tom held his head high and stood up to his rivals through thick and thin.

The author did a wonderful time setting the scenes and background of Tom Patterson for things to come in his next book while holding the readers interest in this intriguing story and quick mesmerizing read.

An action packed story that held my interest from beginning to end, Jerry S. Drake has treated us to an entertaining beginning for things to come in the Tom Patterson series!

Enjoy!

Very Good Western Novels
By James S. Ford
I bought all three "Tom Patterson" westerns because I enjoyed the first so much. If you want to read the character Paterson's life in a historical sequence, read the novels in the reverse order in which they were written.
