The LE JOOLA began listing further and further onto her side. There was no warning from the crew...no one saw, heard, or felt anything...other than the terrifying sensation of the deck slipping out from under them. At first, when passengers felt the steep incline of the deck, they thought it was a rolling motion from the waves--praying the ship would roll back.
Passengers near the cargo deck heard the rumble of vehicles sliding and crashing onto the port bulkheads. The LE JOOLA continued to heel...higher and higher...exposing her flat bottom hull to the surging waves.
Of hundreds that managed to escape only 64 survived. What caused this disaster that was worse than the Titanic? Why weren't lifeboats or life rafts launched? About the Author
After a successful career in the aerospace industry Pat Wiley began his second career as a writer at the New School for Creative Writing. A series of short stories followed about his adventures sailing his boat on a two year, three thousand-mile journey to the islands of the Caribbean and South America. From his journey, he wrote his first novel EYEWITNESS a nautical murder mystery.
The Sinking of the MV Le JOOLA: Africa's Titanic is his first book. The non-fiction narrative is the result of two-years of research into one of the worst maritime tragedies in recorded history--a tragedy, which tore at the soul of a country. His interviews with survivors and extensive in-country research revealed the shameful loss of life and incredible accounts of survival that form the heart of the book.
Pat is a licensed Captain and takes time out from his writing to teach sailing and boat building to inner-city children. He resides in North Carolina with his wife, an accomplished painter and sculptor.

Thoroughly researched document of a mind-blowing disaster

A competently written book and an important document of an incredible tragedy which has been under-reported by the international press. Wiley has done a remarkable job of outlining aspects of the cultures most affected by this terrible event and presenting the survivors and victims in a respectful manner that paints them as three dimensional. After learning more about these people - their backgrounds, their aspirations, their families and their responsibilities - I was very apprehensive when I approached the part of the book which dealt with the capsize itself - he had painted the passengers of the Joola so vividly that I dreaded the details of their experience. I would recommend this book to anyone who has an interest in the subject of ships and ferries, wrecks, West Africa in general, Senegal in particular - although I believe the stories captured have a human interest that goes beyond any of these niches.

This book like many other disasters gives you some background information ,and in this case it covers some people who live in small remote African town. The author's writing style is both engaging and empathetic thereby producing a well written and moving book. I have read hundreds of books in my life and this one will also have a special place. In short, it is worth every penny and every second of your time.

SUPERB!! Well-written account of the Joola!

Imagine this scenario: A shipwreck with as many victims as the Titanic -- no, more victims in fact -- took place in 2002. And the world didn't hear about it.
Isn't that just chilling?
MV Le Joola is the name of this ship of the past. On a tragic night just over a decade ago, the ship had capsized, completely turned itself upside-down in the water. Hundreds and hundreds of people aboard were either instantly killed in the tumble, or drowned soon afterward.
64 survived.
1864 died.
In modern-day relative terms, think of the almost 3,000 people who died during the attack on the World Trade Center, and how greatly the huge country of the United States felt the impact. Now think of a very small country, Senegal, and how wiping out almost 2,000 of their population must have impacted their lives. In truth, every family in Senegal (and the surrounding Casamance region) was affected tragically.
Why didn't the world truly hear of the disaster? There are many answers to this question.
It happened in a third-world country.
More lives could have easily been saved, but they weren't.
Senegal's government tried to cover up infringing facts.
This book holds so many descriptions and details of the shipwreck. I enjoyed reading it. For anyone interested in maritime history, this is definitely a must-read.
Pat Wiley has written the ultimate book on the MV Le Joola. After hearing of the ship, he visited Senegal 3 times to collect survivor accounts. He has done a superb job putting this book together into a complete account of what really happened about the Joola.

They kept returning -- memories of the movie 'Titanic' -- rumors of only one engine operating -- thoughts of the fisherman who apparently drowned at dock -- and the boat leaning to one side, which no one could explain to me.
