Neafsey's Surnames of Ireland is an must have resource for researchers interested in Irish surnames. The book fills a niche which to this point in time has not been met. Each of the approximately 200 surnames is dealt with in a thorough and comprehensive manner. What sets Neafsey's approach aside is the use of distribution maps to identify areas where each of the names is localized. Relying on telephone directories for his data, he provides background material from standard sources, such as Woulfe and Maclysaght, but his own appreciation and clear understanding of Irish surnames is evident in a thorough explanation of the etymology of each name. If you have an interest in Irish surnames Neafsey's Surnames of Ireland is an essential resource.

Not that detailed; some names are treated much more extensively than others. Some guesses as to name's meaning or ancestry very brief or sketchy. By no means a "scholarly" or deep treatment.
