Review
'It's a really tight, gripping story with a pacey plot, but what really stands out for me is the sheer beauty of the writing. Here there is a wordsmith at the top of her game... it's one of those novels where a great story meets a great storyteller. There's going to be a sequel and I can't wait!' - John McIntyre, RadioNZ
From the Back Cover
"Our sea-wreck stranger doesn't stand much of a chance, not on Dunnett Island..."
Ness, Ty and their cousin Sophie live in a small island community: a community that has turned its back on the sea and on its own past.
When the arrival of a stranger forces all three to question the world they know - a world dominated by superstition, fear and loss - they each have a choice to make. Rebelling against the harsh austerity of her life, Ness chooses to follow the sea currents running in her blood. It proves a choice that risks everything - including her own life.
With its strong cast of characters, Anna Mackenzie's perceptive, enigmatic novel will have you firmly in its grip.

So Original - a Must-Read
By Tui Allen
It's a few weeks since I finished this book and it still haunts me. It's actually part one of a trilogy but it had a completeness that allowed me to be satisfied with how this first part finished. I know I can read on and find out what becomes of Ness, but for now I'm happy to imagine her as she was at the close of the story. It was one of those endings that has a transcendent quality, where the characters are able to step right away and move on to a higher level - a new existence.
This post apocalyptic story was set on an island where a culture had developed in isolation from the rest of the world which may or may not even exist. On the island this future time has much more in common with the past. Both past and future were shadowy presences hanging over the characters.
The story had an earthy quality and showed the best and the worst aspects of human nature. I'm a sailor and I loved the way the sea was portrayed, somehow making it seem like the cause and solution to all problems. The sea was a both a huge threat and also an escape from the darkness to the mystery beyond. I felt the sea to be almost one of the characters.
Ness was fascinating - tough but compassionate, brave but vulnerable.
I found the book engrossing and original and I recommend it, not only to the target young adult audience but to adults like me as well.

Breath-taking description and compelling dialogue
By KiwiGirl
This is one of the best YA novels in recent years. While post apocalyptic, it is not dominated by a sense of doom and in fact is uplifted by Mackenzie's talent for descriptive prose and convincing dialogue. Her character development is great and the plot moves along nicely. This is a good choice for students studying - the quality of the writing is not compromised by its accessibility to young readers.
