Another great way to add yoga to your day

NOTE - I picked up both this book, and the companion volume "Good Day Yoga". As my opinions pretty much apply to both books (the only difference being that one is geared for the AM and one for the PM), I'm going to be leaving the same review for both editions.

That said, I'm giving this book a solid two thumbs up.

I've been involved in the fitness industry in some fashion for 20+ years. In that time, I've trained athletes, pro fighters, military and law enforcement, and plenty of just "regular folks". I've seen, done, and learned about it all as it relates to sport performance, bodybuilding, losing weight, or just keeping up basic fitness levels.

The one thing I wasn't ever very well-versed on was yoga.

The main problem I've had over the years is that most times I've tried to delve into the world of different types of yoga, either it ended up becoming too immersed into the spiritual side (which is great for some people, but I need information I know I can apply to the masses...and I apply own personal spiritual growth in other ways), or it used yoga as a complete exercise system. Now while I know the benefits of yoga for flexibility, tension reduction, relaxation, flow, and more, I've never been a believer that it's all a person needs in order to build sufficient levels of strength or cardio, let alone explosiveness, work capacity, or other physical measures.

What I've looked for for quite a while has been basic information on yoga and flows/routines that could be added to any one of a variety of different workouts, programs, or simply just lifestyles - depending on the person and their goal. (Both for myself and for the people I help.)

That's what "Good Night Yoga" gives you - 3 simple and easy to follow yoga programs that anybody can implement right away. They're clearly explained, not overly complicated, and can be started by anybody literally today.

The short FAQ at the end of the book also answers a variety of commonly asked yoga questions. Again - in a simple way that anyone can understand and relate to.

All in all - pick this up and implement the routines, and you should see results fairly quickly.

Get Some ZZZZZZZZZZZs

This is an excellent book with some great yoga sessions that will help you sleep better. You can pick the routine that would suit you better. There are even some yoga exercises that you can do in bed!

If you've hesitated to try yoga, this book is the perfect book to get started with - even if you don't suffer from insomnia. The photos and instructions will make it easy for you to follow along.

I was happy to see a section at the beginning about sleep and stress and how hidden stress can have a huge effect on the quality of our sleep.

Now I plan to check out the companion book Good Day Yoga.

Great for bedtime!

I like this book a lot! I like the pictures and easy to read instructions! It makes a beginner like me know exactly what I am supposed to be doing which is even more relaxing. The poses I have been doing are not difficult or too much of a stretch, but nice and calming. I have been sleeping deeper (my fitness tracker has even told me so) since starting this pre-bedtime routine! I would definitely recommend this book to other yoga newbies and those that need a little extra relaxation before bedtime. It makes me feel like I could try regular yoga sometime or even hot yoga for fitness once I have mastered a few more poses!

an interesting read, yet biased

Paul Henry has always been the person I liked to see most on TVNZ Breakfast (when I had a chance to watch, which is not always easy from Germany). I saw on podcast what caused his demise from TVNZ, and eagerly read his book when I came back to NZ in July 2011. I must say it is the first autobiography I have read in which the author almost exclusively talks about himself, what he is, and why he is it (and that he indeed deserves to be it), status- and standing-wise! If you are not a New Zealander, many things Henry describes are difficult to understand or even to appreciate, such as the internals of and what happens inside New Zealand radio stations, or what has led to the title of the book. It is also the first autobiography I have read which hardly talks about his family, besides his parents in the very beginning, as if that does not play an important role in one's life. Nor is there much talk about his former Breakfast co-hosts, or any political picture drawn (besides the fact that the reader is repeatedly reminded that he votes for National). Henry is best (and in my view has made his best television) when he writes about (or filmed) his adventures abroad, either in war zones or in search of Kiwis abroad ("Ends of the Earth"), and frankly I would have liked to read much more about the experiences he made then. Nevertheless, the book is fun to read, and I had a few good laughs. I also discovered that he and I agree on a number of subjects (e.g., the usefulness of call centers), and the book is nicely made with pictures, side notes, and scribbles.

Very Insightful and Informative and Funny

Paul has let everyone see another side to the man he is. He is funny as well as very intelligent and he has let us into his world with honesty and, at times painful truth, as to who and how he became the person he is today. And even goes into his reasons for leaving the Breakfast show. ( which I loved and he had the best sense of humour.) Brilliant read for those who think they know this man as it shows the true Paul Henry.

Paul Henry at his best/ worst

this book took me through extreme emotions. I grew to immensely dislike this arrogant man but as I read on, my feelings changed. I was an admirer of Paul Henry before I read the book, I admired his nerve to take the chances that other steered clear of. He is upfront about his shortcomings (although he only admits to a couple of errors in his life). He had taken some serious risks on his life in his career which struck me as selfish being that he had a wife and family at home. Lots that you will love and and lots that you will loathe. You either like this guy or wouldn't cross the street. Its a good read. BUT don't expect to find out anything personal about Paul. He is very discreet re his personal life. I couldn't put the book down. It reels you in, wondering what he will get up to next.

"Gunfight at the one-percent corral."

Lucas Davenport gets down and dirty in a thriller that mixes murder and politics, a piranha-filled fish tank where the stakes are high and the money flowing. The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension agent gets pulled into a campaign scandal by the state's governor, who has political aspirations on the horizon and doesn't need any complications when Porter Smalls, a Republican running for US Senator gets catapulted into the headlines for child pornography on his office computer. The most likely candidate for pre-election dirty tricks is his democratic opponent, the bright, wealthy Taryn Grant, with an oversized ego and extravagant plans for her political future. Once Lucas starts digging, he finds not only carefully buried secrets, but the possible murder of a political operative-for-hire, Bob Tubbs, who has suddenly disappeared.

While the Lucas Davenport of the popular Prey series is adept at solving a wide variety of criminal cases in his position at the BAC, this particular scenario takes him into the rarified world of state politics, an equally comfortable venue for the sophisticated detective, where the anonymity of position and wealth provide cover for those who operate behind the façade of public service (strange bedfellows, indeed). Smalls is an old-school politician, a familiar figure with a clear agenda. His opponent, Grant, is one of a new wave of public servants, smart, attractive and ambitious. One of them is headed to Washington. And like the psychological environment that favors physical appearance over integrity, Grant appeals to the narcissistic cult that propels public personalities into positions of power.

No slacker, Davenport is tech savvy and eager to use resources he has cultivated over the years. The particular skills of his computer whiz, ICE, and the current-artist/former-hacker, Kidd, add the spice to this thriller that keeps it contemporary. Criminals are conscious of the advantages of technology, but so is Davenport, who relies heavily on it to bolster his case (maybe not usable in court, but a sufficient vehicle of information to take down a sly operator). The behind-the-scenes shenanigans of the political class provide a grim reminder: power is not only a potent aphrodisiac; it is a motive for murder. It's Davenport's job to unravel an ugly scenario of blackmail and murder without a scandal before an important election. The good vs. evil theme of crime novels has been subtly influenced by technology, albeit an indifferent player, providing another shield against responsibility. Silken Prey loses some of the grit of earlier work, but Sandford has his finger on the pulse of his field, in step with the movers and shakers in the state house as well as on the streets of Minneapolis. Davenport makes even politics fun!

I love this series and I particularly love the main character because he is smart, sexy, a family guy, a cop who drives a Porsche, and ultimately the coolest guy in law enforcement by a mile. Davenport does what he does because he likes it and he has a clearly defined code and sense of right and wrong-he also sees the shades of gray. The writing as always, flows smoothly, the descriptions of the people and places are vivid, and the author manages to make lifelike even the politicians that inhabit this book. Through this long running series we have come to know the characters (and they are that), that inhabit Davenport's world and it's like visiting with old friends when they take part in solving the political mystery/intrigue/thriller/suspense that takes place in a compressed period of time before election day. Davenport's friends are a motley crew of misfits but they get the job done every time. This book is recommended to all who like a smart mystery that is complex at times has many twists and turns and is hard to put down. I know that the author has said that Davenport will retire at some point, but he gives the reader so much enjoyment and downright fun I hope he goes on forever.

The bad elements outweigh the good, sadly

I'm not going to write a full story synopsis. This is a review, not a book report. You can get that synopsis on the product page.

Briefly, a political dirty trickster is murdered (as we learn in the opening chapter), his body hidden, and it appears to the world as if he's vanished for reasons unknown. A Republican senatorial candidate is framed with a kiddie porn scam, and the state's Governor assigns Lucas Davenport to get to the bottom of the mess during the closing week of a tight election between the victimized candidate and a sociopathic Democrat billionaire. Davenport has to wade through a morass of politics, murderous aides, bent cops, and other obstacles to learn the truth of the matter.

There are aspects of the book that I really liked. In many ways Sanford has returned to stylistic touches that made this series popular to begin with. A tougher Davenport, the brisk pace, well-realized characters, a couple of things like that.

But as I mentioned in my title, I think there are many things that outweigh those improvements.

First of all, though I like a complex plot in a mystery, I think Sanford went a bit too far this time around. It was almost a "who's on first" effort to keep things straight in my mind; I felt I needed a scorecard to keep track of who done what. Like seasoning food with pepper; some is okay, too much is a disaster.

I also think that Sanford let his own political views permeate the story to far too great an extent, to the point where it affected the story, and particularly the ending.

Which brings us to the most important problem I had with the book, which was this: I hated the ending! Without revealing any spoilers, all I can say is that the ending was about as emotionally unsatisfying as it could get. I deducted one complete star just for that, so what would have been a 4-star book ended up with 3 stars.

In his monumental work Bloody Shambles, Volume Two, Christopher Shores described in detail the British retreat out of Burma, culminating at the end of May 1942. The monsoon then brought operations on land and in the air virtually to a halt for several months as the British and Indian forces prepared to retake Burma.

The Japanese however, had very different ideas. Air War for Burma picks up the story from the beginning of June 1942 and follows the hard-fought campaigns through to the end of the war in August 1945. Here the activities of the RAF and USAAF during the desperate fighting of 1942-44, resulting ultimately in victories at Imphal and Kohima, are fully recounted. No less a forgotten air force than was the 14th ‘Forgotten Army’, the RAF particularly was denied the most modern and effective aircraft until late in the fighting, struggling to survive with obsolescent equipment against frequently superior Japanese machines.

Described herein are the operations during the First and Second Arakan Campaigns; support for the Chindits in their long-range penetrations deep into enemy-held territory; the savage sieges of Imphal and Kohima; and the final victorious advance across the plains of Central Burma to Mandalay and Rangoon. Detailed also are the activities over the Indian Ocean and the East Indies of the Royal Navy’s aircraft carriers and the aircrews of the Fleet Air Arm.

Painstakingly researched from official sources, log books, letters and interviews, this is far and away the best reference work on the subject, and completes the set.

Weakest of the Series, but still Good

This is last in this brilliant series on the air war over Asia. It should be noted that main flaw with this book is that war got larger very quickly and the sheer number of operations increased to a degree that it is not possible to chronicle them in the same way air battles were described in the first two volumes: more squadrons, more pilots, more ops and less and less Japanese pilots with less infrastructure and desire to write about the downfall of the Japan in SE Asia.

Beyond that there is the usual brilliant writing and combat detail. The regular multi-national nature of the Imperial combat services are a stark reminder of the relative "equality" of what Britain and the commonwealth were fighting for, especially when compared with the strictly Japanese pilots -- Japan never succeeded allowing, much less incorporating other nations and races into her fighting forces. It is something often lost and underappreciated in this politically correct, cartoonesque interpretations of history.

A wonderful book and certainly necessary for those who have read the previous two.

Fitting Conclusion to a Definitive Air War Trilogy!

Christopher Shores' monumental history of the air war in Southeast Asia from 1942 to 1945 wraps up with this Grubb Street volume covering "the long road back" following the British defeat in Burma. Marked by impeccable research, this volume and the others in the BLOODY SHAMBLES set constitute the definitive story of that little-known air campaign.

Picking up immediately after the British retreat from Burma, Shores charts the Allies regrouping, resurgence and ultimate triumph over the Japanese. The Southeast Asia theater was considered a backwater by the Allied High Command, British Southeast Asia air units making do, for example, with Mohawks, Blenheims and Hurricanes for far too long. Eventually re-equipped with modern aircraft like Spits, Mosquitoes and Beaufighters, RAF units were joined by USAAF units flying P-51s, B-25s, B-24s, etc. in supporting Allied ops such as the Arakan campaigns, support of the Chindits and Merrill's Marauders and the push into Burma.

Shores crams a lot of information into 381 pages of text but AIR WAR FOR BURMA is eminently readable. (Appendices take up another 46 pages). The volume features over 220 photographs, many previously unpublished, along with area maps.

Though other books have dealt with this subject over the years, Shores' trilogy will stand the test of time as being the definitive account. His research into and use of official British, Japanese and American records along with personal reminiscences combine to produce a fresh, comprehensive and factual account of a geographically wide-ranging air campaign.

This is military aviation history at its finest.

An aside: In reading AIR WAR FOR BURMA, it was eye-opening to read of the over-claiming that resulted from the air combats fought. By utilizing Allied records and surviving Japanese records, Shores was able to uncover and present the first accurate account of those long-ago combats.

Account of a Forgotten Theatre of WW II

What can be said about a account of a forgotten area of WW II. This book covers the Allied Air Operations from 1942 thru 1945 in a part of the
world that rarely gets any coverage in ANY World War II publication.
And it is a quite detailed account of the day to day operations of the men
and aircraft involved. The author excels in this with spades, as does his other publications. Well worth the price.
