The Overworld Chronicles just Keep Getting Better~ Amazing!

This book rocked my socks off. I'm going to need another feather for my fedora hat when I'm done...

Just as Justin thinks he can finally try to get back to some semblance of a 'normal' life, fate decides it has other plans. Justin wishes nothing more than some free time with Elyssa, the Buttercup to his Wesley.

In his usual style, Justin barrels into trouble, head-first with little regard to planning. Walking away from a bloodbath at his high school is just the beginning of the adventure in this installment of the Otherworld series. There's no time for smelling the supernatural roses when you are on the run from every supernatural creature in the book and maybe even destiny itself. Once again, the book sprints from the starting gate directly into action, intrigue, and more details about Justin, his family, and Foreseeance 4311. As if all this isn't enough, he finds himself separated from Elyssa... and stranded in Columbia.

Fate, it seems, may not be ready for Justin and Elyssa to get their happily ever after just yet. Elyssa's family and especially her father feel nothing but hatred toward his 'kind' and will not allow their love to continue. Death may not stop true love... but a mind wipe probably could. Things were about to get even realer.

Readers that fell in love with Justin's wit can rest easy knowing that this book is just as humorous as the ones before it. His snarky humor in the unlikeliest of situations always brings a smile to my face. It's always a pleasure to see more of Justin as he further leaves his humble role playing, man-boobs origins behind and takes more steps into his power. He adds to his rag-tag family, charming and bumbling his way to find a path that will not lead to destruction of life as we know it, war within the Overworld, and where Elyssa will be by his side.

The Supernatural ride continues...

Book 3 in the Overworld chronicles has me waiting for book 4. The series is fast paced and full of a variety of supernatural characters (not just another teenage vampire story). There is a brief overview at the beginning of the book for readers who haven't read the first two but since these are fast reads and fun it's worth starting at the beginning

This book answers the question of whether Justin Case Slade the half-demon spawn, will find true love with Elyssa the Damphyr (half-human - half-vampire). It's not exactly a match made in heaven and family and Overworld politics, not to mention a Colombian drug cartel are against the union. I won't answer the question of whether they overcome the obstacles since I'm not a fan of reviews with spoilers.

So now I've probably left you thinking this is a teenage vampire love story but it really isn't. I'm not a teenager and not typically a fan of the vampire genre so you may ask why I love these stories. The reason is the author and his sarcastic wit. The books are action packed with Justin getting himself in more scrapes than John McClane, and Justin is even harder to kill.

Hopefully in the next book more will be revealed about Justin's mystery mother and sister.

Wonderful series!

Your mom just told you to stay away from her forever. You almost died giving pretty much all your blood to a dying friend. You just met your girlfriend's dad who threatened your life and grounded his daughter. Oh, and a secret, powerful assassin ring-leader wants you to do all his dirty work to help keep the society of the Overworld from churning out a war that will lead to complete destruction of all magical and non-magical kind. No big deal for Justin Slade, this is his new norm.

I loved book #1, not so much for #2, but this sequel kicked it back up, for me.

SO MUCH happens! It's filled to the rim with more background info, new and exciting fights and dangers, and more mysterious characters that get a little more informational. I have no idea where to start!

At first I didn't really like the 'Elyssa' chapters...but they helped answer some of those oh-so-alluding questions. The scale of this whole situation gets way bigger than I would have guessed.

There's just way too much going on for me to really pinpoint anything, but it's all awesome. And that sneak peek chapter for #4?! Crazy!

I have to admit I'm doubtful all my questions will get answered. I prefer a series of books like this to tie up nice and orderly at some point, but it's really hard for me to imagine this to be possible with as much going on as it is. There's still a lot hanging unfinished at the end of this one, too. How many books long is this going to last?

Once in This Lifetime

This is a good story and I love that it was an inspirational and interracial romance. I enjoyed reading it, but felt that it lack something; when I read a book I like when the characters are still dancing around in my head long after I have finished reading the book and I did not get that with this book. I do appreciate Ms. Manie for writing an inspirational and interracial romance, it is so hard to find these types of romance novels.

Brigette Maine is becoming one of my favorite author's. I have not been disappointed in any of her books. I loved John the hero for the way he treated Julia after the way her first husband had treated her. He showed her how a man should treat the woman he loved. On to book three.

Sensual Christian Romance

I would probably have given this book a 4 rating if not for all the sensuality. For a Christian romance there was way too much heavy petting and kissing. For two people who believe in no sex until marriage they continuously put themselves in situations where there is strong temptation to have sex.
While I liked it enough to buy another book from this author I am hoping for more next time. Like another reviewer said I walked away feeling a little empty with some ambivalence about the characters, especially the H. He started off the relationship by lying to the h; and stated several times that he was immediately drawn to her because of her looks - hardly Christian values. It was disappointing to see that even a Christian wasn't prepared to take the time to look past the surface to the woman beneath. From the story line it seems that if he hadn't found her beautiful he wouldn't have bothered with her. So the initial sense you get of him is pretty shallow; then he has the nerve to get angry when after telling her twice in less than 24 hours that he wanted her as soon as he saw her and she replies that she doesn't do sleep overs. He is upset that she would question his values like that - of course he doesn't believe in sex before marriage and what has he done to make her question his values? - I don't know maybe starting off the relationship with lies? The H does grow on you as the story advances and show himself to be a pretty stand up guy.

My only other problem with the story is that the characters are second advent believers; the author spends a lot of time talking about religion and quoting scripture but she never explains what makes SABs different from the "standard" Christians.

Everything to get the rest of your life organized and improve your life

This is an awesome book by the "Slob Sisters" Pam Young and Peggy Jones, authors of "Sidetracked Home Executives." This book outlines in great detail how to create a system of getting your life in order. Their first book, "Sidetracked Home Executives" is the nuts and bolts book about how to get your home cleaned and organized (for people who are not "born organized" and have a hard time with staying focused and who tend to be perfectionists and/or ADD). This book takes the same principals and applies it to the rest of your life - Love and Romance, Dreams, Prosperity, Health and Beauty, Parents and Kids, Freedom, Appreciation, Work, Laughter, Hospitality, Friendship, and Giving, and Faith (these are the final chapters of the book - taken on one month at a time). It gives great ideas for getting all those thoughts in your head down on to 3x5 cards and actually doing something about it. Using this system will help you grow more into the person that you want to be, instead of staying stagnant. The book is filled with real life examples (which I find so many self-help books are actually lacking) and lots and lots of humor. I currently have a library copy but will definitely be buying it to have on hand and actually try to start implementing slowly (baby steps!). A great addition for any Flybaby ([...]). I can't recommend this book enough!

I found this once in a library in Texas - a nice change from most organizational books. Goes month by month, and gives a different focus idea for each month. Good ideas for getting motivated, but not too much nuts and bolts - get those from other books. This is for motivation and direction.

Wonderful, immersive novel

A really good novel, even more than a film, can get the reader inside the minds of its characters. OLD TOWN is a novel that lets the reader vicariously experience three generations of life in China. Spanning much of the 20th century, the narrative covers the country's most tumultuous period.

At first, adjusting to some of the conventions of Chinese nomenclature might take some getting used to. Most of the characters are referred to by their relationship titles rather than proper names: for example, Ninth Brother and Second Sister are the maternal grandparents of the narrator. Once the reader gets the hang of this, it feels quite natural and probably helps maintain the Chinese "feel" of the novel. Translator George Fowler made a good call there.

Although OLD TOWN deals with one family's story, it's really an epic about an entire era. We see the struggles of the 1930s and 1940s, culminating in the victory of the Communist Party, followed by the catastrophes of the "Great Proletarian Cultural Revolution," ending in a modern China where status is more closely tied to money than ideological purity.

One aspect of the book that is likely to attract little notice in China but may surprise Western readers is its presentation of China as a heterogeneous country, with divisions of old and young, rich and poor, right and left, North and South, city and country. It's not a portrayal that usually comes through in Western novels or films. Throughout the book, almost incidentally, Zhe lets the reader see just how large and varied the country is.

Outside of educating the reader about Chinese history, geography, and literature (a helpful timeline, map, and family tree, as well as footnotes for literary and cultural references, help the reader keep up with a great deal), OLD TOWN is a wonderful story about faith, family, change, and continuity. It's a novel that truly immerses the reader, in the best sense of the word.

I will make this review short. The book "Old Town" is a long book, yet the stories are quite fascinating. This is a story lover's book excellently translated.

Do look at the map and notice that Old Town is located in Fukien province. You also must be aware that China is a land of many dialects which are, in fact different languages in some cases, more different than Italian and Spanish.

This is a book about family and characters. Also it sheds light on the endurance of Chinese culture even though it would seem that Chairman Mao tried to have it destroyed during the Cultural Revolution.

I am specifically interested in China and its history. But this book is larger than that of specific area. For example, it makes me wish I had spent more time talking to my grandparents, now dead, of the people in their families and written them down. I wouldn't even have to be literary about it. There are stories I was lucky enough to have heard, but have forgotten many of the details and I feel sadness at that in addition to the stories I know, there are those I never even heard. Besides containing stories of human events, Chinese culture, individual characters and humanity in general, the book made me nostalgic about my family's history and geneology.

Epic Family Saga in Revolutionary China

As fascinating as parts of Lin Zhe's historical saga Old Town is, this books is badly in need of an editor. More often than not, it feels like a repetitive slow slog. It is probably 1/3 to 1/2 too long. This is a shame, because that takes away from a spell binding story set in Southern China. The story focuses on 3 generations of a family history. The grandparents are known by the traditional nicknames used in families Ninth Brother and Second Sister. Using this type of nomenclature has the double effect of retaining the Chinese feel, and making easier not to have to recognize unfamiliar names. We see how these rural, but educated (Ninth Brother is a doctor), are buffeted by the tides of history. One sees the promise of pre-PRC communism, and then the devastation that it wrought in its full paranoid glory. Whether intentionally or not, Lin Zhe portray's the grandparents generation as the Greatest Generation, and each successive generation degenerates (or perhaps because of circumstances) until you reach the self-centered, whining narrator of today.
The book follows the granddaughter of Ninth Brother and Second Sister as she travels back to Old Town relating her failures in love and career and then flashes back to the post Qing dynasty era, the civil war, and then communist rule. The difficulties (hunger, uncertainty, fighting) are only compounded by the usual cast of characters who would find a home in any daytime soap opera (alcoholics, thieves, violent tempers, unrequited love, and the list goes on). What is unusual about the Ninth Brother and Second Sister is their Christian faith, certainly a rarity in China. What is a bit annoying is that the frequent use of prayers detracts from the the themes of of faith and redemption rather than underscoring. That is because the prayers are not pillars of faith but pop-up like an overused rant.
Nevertheless, the strength of this book is the author's description of the difficult times in modern Chinese history. There is nothing new from some of the more common books that have already been translated. However, this hints at a depth of literature that has not been made accessible to Western audiences.
