Three of the Best Amish Christmas Novellas!

When my autographed copy of "Amish White Christmas" by Samantha Jillian Bayarr arrived in the mail, I couldn't wait to open its beautiful cover. Inside, I found three short Amish romances (novellas) just waiting for me to get lost in. I personally like a short read, especially during the busier Holiday weeks. This book allowed me to grab that 'finished' feeling we all love so much when we finish a longer read. I like that about novellas. I also like that fact that these are all Christian reads. As a minister, I know that when I am done reading one of Ms. Bayarr's Christian novels, I can just leave it on the meeting house end-table for any of the Parishioners to enjoy. They will love this book too.

Now, about the novella; after reading the first story, "Snowflakes on Goose Pond", I just had to continue onward, rallying myself between chores, I quickly finished the second novella, "Snow Angles". Both story-lines grasped my attention at the get-go, leaving me spellbound in Amish territory for most of the day and evening.

Today, after my work is complete, and more prezzies are wrapped, I look forward to my afternoon tea and another promising tale of an Amish romantic encounter by Samantha Bayarr ... and what awaits me in book three; "The Gingerbread Haus".

Most Exciting!

Not enough to it. None of the three stories had enough meat in them. I like to really get involved with the characters when I read.

Disappointed. Couldn't get into the shallow characters. More of a pre-teen book than an adult book due to the immaturity of the characters. Have read other books by the author, and enjoyed those books. Will be more careful before buying a book by this author in the future. Hoping to get my $ back....couldn't finish the book because it was so boring & predictable.

Overall, this book would be a good start for beginners, but it's nothing that you can't discover from an hour on the internet or on the warrior forum. About the Author

Samantha Towle began her first novel in 2008 while on maternity leave. She completed the manuscript five months later and hasn’t stopped writing since. In addition to The Mighty Storm, she is the author of The Bringer and the Alexandra Jones series, all penned to tunes of The Killers, Kings of Leon, Adele, The Doors, Oasis, Fleetwood Mac, and more of her favorite musicians. A native of Hull and a graduate of Salford University, she lives with her husband, Craig, in East Yorkshire with their son and daughter.

Raw and Beautiful

Five reasons why I absolutely loved Trouble

3) Beautiful Epilogue
4) Jordan..... he is swoony and funny .... I loved his banter with Dozer the dog
5) Duel point of view's.... I loved being able to be in Mia and Jordan's head.

Trouble is a raw and beautiful story that will make your heart ache, cry and laugh!!!

Readers deserve BETTER.

I *hate* giving a one star review, I truly do. But everyone is entitled to their opinion, and just as more than 100 people love this book, the few of us who don't are allowed to at least explain why we didn't.

There are *SPOILERS* in the review.

Grammar:
I read the free sample, and at first I was intrigued by the characters but repelled by the grammar and typos. By the time I had finished the sample, I was so impressed by the typos that I felt compelled to buy the book and started highlighting them. Started counting for this review, stopped when I got to 100, and that doesn't include the apostrophes - they are almost 100% reversed for possessives/plurals. Even for self-publishing, which is for some reason held to a lower standard, that's just abysmal; especially since she credits several beta readers/editors helping her along the way.

Some of the worst offenses -
"What he is or isn't is, is of no relevance." .... what?
"I'd just moved to the states from the England." lmao
"...in my whole entire twenty-six years on this plant." Seriously?
"If he hadn't of got there..." - Unforgivable

You are charging for this - invest in a REAL editor. Have the book edited and update the Amazon file. I would change my rating if the effort were actually expended to do so.

Plot points I hated:
1) Both of them are obnoxiously co-dependent.
2) SHE is in a long term relationship, and not only cheats on her boyfriend (in a bathroom, while he's there) but also lies to his face about it.
3) Half the book is her whining about how guilty she feels. Make up your mind!
3) Her boyfriend is NOT a jerk or an addict, doesn't cheat...actually, he should be the love interest.
4) Rock star is a man-child who manipulates her and the situation by any means available to get his way.

***BIG CONFLICT SPOILERS***
Our "hero" is a former addict who promises our "shero" that she's enough to keep him straight - guess what happens. While he's high, he sees pictures of her talking to the ex and flips his lid, accusing her of cheating. She confronts him about the drug use and storms out, only to pathetically come back in the morning thinking they can work things out. She finds his room trashed and him in bed (wasted) with another woman (albeit they both have underwear on). She sobs and sobs and he begs and pleads, saying he never touched the girl (like he would remember?) and she storms out again.
Then after a few days of being clean, he sings "Hurt" and she realizes it's a suicide warning - umm, hello emotional blackmail? Oh yeah, that's totally hot. Finally she flakes out completely, suddenly announcing she can't handle the stress of life in the public eye. Then he says "Marry me" and she jumps his bones in a dressing room.

I love Samantha Towle!!!!!! She SERIOUSLY knows how to write!!! I literally neglected all my duties today as a mom and wife... ( Don't judge me!! :-p my husband picked up the slack from my end... )

Ok, so I read A Lot... I usually end up knowing how the story is going to go... However, this book completely took me by surprise! Lot's of surprises! I would give Trouble 10 STARS if I could... Fantastic Read!!!!!!!

I can't stand Holden Caulfield

I don’t like Holden Caulfield. In fact, I can’t stand him. He’s everything he despises in other people: phony, a compulsive liar, hypocritical, selfish and self-centered. He’s also pessimistic, cynical, very judgmental, critical, and hopelessly depressing. Is it any wonder why he is always so depressed? He cannot stand his own company. But there are moments I felt some kind of compassion for him. Or is it just pity? It’s pity. Like when we learn that his younger brother Allie died from leukemia. Or the suicide of a boy he knew in school. His brother’s death, more than anything, is what may have propelled him to self-destruction. Being so young (a teenager), it is understandable that he has not learned to cope with his brother’s death. He’s also a self-proclaimed atheist and comes from a family that are atheists or at least agnostic. They really do not believe in anything. This, coupled with the tragic loss of his brother has left him unable to deal with loss. There is nothing for him to grasp onto. He is empty inside, and that emptiness is filled with cynicism that borders on despair. It’s no wonder he has flunked out of so many schools. What’s the point of living? That’s what he is probably thinking. Kids his age are phony. Adults are phony. Life is phony. This colors his outlook, or rather, drains all color from life itself. He is shuffled around from one school to another, one day to another, one moment to another. The only thing that brings him any joy is his sister Phoebe, just as Allie once did. He obviously loves her. He is capable of some degree of love, but so torn up inside that he cannot deal with anything. Then there is his curiosity about the ducks at the lagoon in Central Park. Where do they go in the winter when the water freezes? He is like those ducks, and his is stuck in a long winter that might have begun with this brother’s death. There is no place for him to go. Though I suspect he was already a cynical person before Allie’s death. Sarcastic at least. The death just made him more so. It would be interesting to see Holden 10 years later. Or 20 even. Would he have changed at all? I doubt it. People don’t usually change. If they have a streak of sarcasm, it often only becomes more pronounced with age. I can imagine Holden as a grumpy old man. If he made it that far. I don’t know. He seemed bent on self-destruction. He might have died in his 20s or 30s. Maybe even have taken his own life. But despite all his cynicism, he seems to also have a survivor’s streak. Maybe he would have eventually emerged from this pit of darkness. Maybe. I certainly hope so. For his sake.

So why did I give 5 stars to a book with a protagonist I cannot stand? Because J.D. Salinger did a remarkable job of creating him. The fact that people react strongly to this character speaks of the author’s skill in creating him. Holden’s cynical attitude, his foul language, his shifty distrusting eyes, his body language…. It’s all very real and thoroughly depicted. And this resonates with the reader. It definitely leaves an impression. Even if some people like me don’t like Holden, Salinger pulled it off. It deserves 5 stars.

This is not a review of the book. It is a review of the edition. The typesetting and size of the font are horrible. The text is way too small. The publisher crammed so many words on each page that the book is difficult to read with any degree of speed or comfort. I'm returning my copy.

I don't know.

I am torn between liking and not liking this book. Not hating it though. It's just Holden going along and telling some stories. I liked that. I definitely thought Holden was severely depressed and probably having panic attacks towards the end there. I liked the writing style. I liked Holden's voice.
I wouldn't call it a life changer for me, but I did wait till now to read it, 27 years old. I never read it in high school.
So yeah, I'm not going to go into too much detail because I don't need to. Basically you'll have to read it yourself if you haven't yet. Just like any book. '

I loved the story but

First let me say that you are a true story teller but you are really in need of a editor...A GOOD ONE. The book reads like the person who is suppose to be editing your books is just doing a spell check and that is it. I have read a number of your books and have enjoyed them to a degree but they all have the same issues and that is editing. The story you told is worth 5 stars but your presentation of the work will get you no more than the two. Please don`t take this as hate this is just a fan of your work being honest...

to support your family? This book made me sit back and wonder how much would or what would I do for my children. Muscles is driven by love for his sisters and hate for his mom. What a combination. This was a excellent read. Can't wait for part II.

This book left me speechless! If I could, I would give it 10 stars!! This by far is Shameek's BEST novel. It was action packed, a page turner, and overall a good read. I connected with some of the characters on different levels. This book is a MUST read! I tip my hat off to you Mr. Sleight!! Well done!

Exciting Sci-Fi series!

The Riss Survival is the third book of The Riss Series. The Riss-human Nadya is now a star ship Captain and Commander of the space station above the world of Freeland. Freeland is the world of the Clans who had been raiding SAS planets. This book has non stop action with characters who are easy to like. Intolerance, hatred and disgust are still the majority of reactions to the human-riss officers of SAS. The interplay between Nadya and her Riss - Thalia is priceless. Nadya is still in a very long distance relationship with her beloved Bradshaw. The action heats up when an unknown Alien race begins destroying planets outside SAS territory heading towards thier space. Nayda is a very likable person doing the best she can in bad situations. The ending of The Riss Survival suggests there will more books in this series. I sure hope so as I can barely wait for the next one.

3.5 Stars - Good but needs some proofing - I'll buy the next as soon as it comes out

I enjoyed this book and I've read it twice. I like the characters, there were few or no low points in the plot. The tactical logic in this series is a bit weak but it's not bad.

There are some tech issues (e.g. radar is light speed based but they don't talk about light lag at all) but this is not a tech based Sci-Fi; it's more about the story under a given set of conditions. Accept the givens and you can enjoy the book.

If you liked the past books in this series you should like this one.

It does have some typos that do takeaway form the flow of the prose. I know proofing is very hard; I'm doing revisions on my master's thesis so I really do know. The typos are enough to sometimes make you a bit confused. Sometimes it's a number or kind error (5 here but 6 there etc. strikers/sharks/ghosts) sometimes gender, sometimes verb conjugation.

The structure of the book is a bit odd. It felt a bit more like a novella and then part one of the (very connected) next book. Al told it was a good length but I would have liked to have the remained of this story in the book. I guess we'll have to wait for the next one. The other books in the series were all made of several sorter arcs but each book felt more like more of a singular entity to me.

I will buy the next book once it is released (hopefully soon?)

Interesting plot, world building

Ok, I'm hooked. I've read the three novels in this series back to back over the last few days. This is military science fiction, which means the strategy is the main focus. The author creates some interesting populations and forces them to work together against a common foe. As is common in this genre there are a lot of characters we know in name only and for a brief time. The main characters are more fleshed out, but this is still a conflict driven series.

Accepting the genre for what it is is key to enjoying the series. And I'm enjoying it very much!

One negative is the editing. This book had many more glaring mistakes than the first two -- and they weren't clean. A lot of word substitution problems, which means the reader has to stop and figure out what word should be there. I think the author may be in too big a rush to publish, and needs to take the time -- or have someone else take the time -- to do one final edit. That said, I want number four right now!
