The writing once again is pitch perfect and the characterisation is superb, so good the characters practically leap off the pages. Hardly's story is dark and complex, but at all times truly human and believable. I highly recommend this page-turner, an excellent sequel, can't wait for the third book!

Excellent Sequel!! (But Great Single as well)

I read "My Temporary Life" by Martin Crosbie when it first came out. Waiting for the sequel "Hardly" I read "My Temporary Life" a second time (I never read a book twice) and was even better the second time! I was really looking forward to Martin's next book, "Hardly", and was delighted when it was released. Well, it did not let me down and I know I will be reading it again while waiting for the third and final book in the Trilogy.
"Hardly", to my surprise was filled with a bit of historical fiction (though accurate) which I was I enjoyed (I read a lot of historical fiction). But that's is not all it was.
As I read it I saw the loyalty and intimacy among friends and family, precious, no matter the cost.
Based on the military in Northern Ireland it is also filled with passion and is a read for all.
Martin's descriptions really 'take you there' and are beautifully written reinforcing the passion contained in the book. Actually enough so that I found myself writing excerpts into my journal!! (not a usual occurence for me)
All in all a profound and passionate piece of work.
Upon finishing "Hardly" I feel as though I've lost a best friend and since then have not found a replacement (am always reading at least one book but any book I pick up I put back down finding no interest in it. (resenting Martin Crosbie a bit for):-)
And so, I am awaiting the next book. Maybe I will just re-read "Hardly" next.
BTW-I read many free Kindle books found on Amazon. That is how I found "My Temporary Life". However, I was more than happy to pay for "Hardly".
I will be more than happy to pay for future books from this author.

Couldn't Put It Down

I haven't read the first book in the series, so I was wondering whether I would be able to get into the second one straight away without knowing what has happened to Hardly already. I needn't have worried, this really is a stand alone book in that sense, I had no trouble catching up with his life and leaping straight into the loft in which he is hiding when this book starts. And another thing...I am definitely going to read the first book, I love this character.
I read this because I grew up in England during The Troubles, and know of people who saw active service in Northern Ireland during that time, so I was interested to see if this would give me an insight into a little of what went on over there. I wasn't disappointed, I felt that My Name is Hardly does more than just touch on the way things were for British Army soldiers in Ireland then. The writer catches the nerve shredding combination of mind-numbing tedium interlaced with moments of pure terror as Hardly gets into a situation that very quickly goes beyond his control. My heart was actually pounding at that point, and I read on into the night to see what happened.
Mr Crosbie has created an unusual hero here. He's not tall, dark and handsome, he's short and very ordinary, which makes one instantly like him. He's Everyman , so even I, neither male, nor Scottish nor a soldier, could relate to him. It's difficult to create someone who is both ordinary and likeable, but Hardly is that person in my mind. I wanted things to go well for him. You will have to read it to see if they did.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. It answered some questions for me about that time in our history in an entertaining way. It combined periods of introspection by Hardly with full on action scenes with plenty of running about and shooting at people. I give it a solid five stars.

A great book!

I really love the way Martin Crosbie writes. "My Name is Hardly" has everything a reader wants, action, romance, laughs, lots of emotion and interesting surprises. As is the case with "My Temporary Life", Martin's first book, I purchased both the paper back and e-book versions. "My Name is Hardly" is a must read that you won't be able to put down. I can't wait for number three of Crosbie's trilogy.
