Now you can finally make those yummy vegetarian dishes yourself!!

This is a really fantastic recipe book - at the beginning there is great advice and information on getting adequate nutrition in order to have an overall healthy diet, for example Omega 3, calcium, iodine, iron etc, AND the foods that are rich in these nutrients. Also included is a pyramid nutrition guide and advice on getting the best nutrition from a vegetarian diet, plus the different types of vegetarian diets. The fact is, it IS easy enough to get all those nutrients from other sources besides meat.

At the end of each recipe is advice on the non-vegetarian variation of the recipe, for example adding chicken, fish or beef etc, which basically makes each recipe into two recipes, not one!

I'm a meat-eater, but have always had an interest in being more vegetarian (I never wished to cut it out completely however). I have a few friends who are vegetarians/vegans, and being an animal-lover I've always had an interest in being one myself (80-90% of the time), but never quite got around to it. It always seemed so difficult creating those tasty vegetarian dishes that are better for you, but still have the delicious flavors you love. I knew they existed though! I'd had them plenty of times before, at restaurants, or cooked by vegetarian/vegan friends. The problem was I didn't seem to be able to do it myself.

This recipe book has been an enormous help to me, I can tell you - I've already tried quite a few of the recipes and they have gone off without a hitch and tasted fantastic. I couldn't believe it was my own cooking! If, however, on a particular night I feel I would like to add some meat, just for variation, I can do that too!!

I'm even planning a vegetarian night with some friends to show off my new vegetarian cooking skills, and will definitely be recommending the book to them too. I will be keeping an eye out for any other recipe books from this author. Very highly recommended!!

More than happy with this book!

I am more than happy with this book!
Although I am not a true vegetarian, I don't really like to eat meat. But the thing is when I have to cook for somebody else as well, I am worried that the things I like will not be tasteful or attractive enough. So I noticed that lately I am reading recipes in magazines in search of new ideas.
This book solves it for me - I can have two versions of the same recipe, I can adapt it to my taste and the taste of others, the recipes are easily read, the ingredients are fresh and interesting, it is also inspiring as a conversation subject during a meal, overall I am completely happy and can't wait to start cooking!

Kudos to a great cookbook!

First of all, I must say that I AM the self-confessed "cookbook junkie" so every chance that I have to get a new one, I'm completely on it. I LOVE TO COOK!!

Secondly, being raised in a flexitarian home, I'm well acquainted with this dietary approach.

However, "Vegetarian Recipes For Meat Eaters - Vol 1" (just as is Vol 2) is more than a cookbook, but is also a guide for those who wish to make healthy changes in their dietary intake. The educational section is a great way to open this, but the recipes are perfect. I was especially grabbed by "Pepper and Sweet Onion Pastries with Pesto," "Crunchy Rice Squares with Avocado Salad," and "Cheese Polenta with Mushroom Rosemary Sauce." All of these are inventive and restaurant quality in their concepts.

If you're bored with meals that are the "same-old, same-old," then this is the book for you!!

Instruction Manual for Difficult Times

Dearal Jordan describes his Waiting: How to Bloom Where You are Planted as “a practical guide for anyone who wants to learn how to be content in their present situation or to make the best out of a bad situation.” Unlike some writers, he is successful with delivering just what he promised. Waiting takes a look at a passage of scripture that is often quoted; unfortunately, it’s also often taken out of context.

Most people use Jeremiah 29:11 to encourage people who are approaching a time of transition in life, usually a graduating student. This verse assures us that God has good things in store for us, and that’s encouraging. However, a reading of the surrounding verses makes the promise even more impactful. If you are unfamiliar with this text, it addresses the children of Israel who have been captured and are now exiled in Babylon. Through the prophet Jeremiah, God sends a message of hope to the people; but not the kind of message you would expect to be delivered to a group in their situation. Instead of telling them that He will soon deliver them, God tells them that they will be exiled for seventy years. He then instructs them to do things like: build homes, plant gardens, marry off their sons and daughters and seek the peace and prosperity of the city where they reside with their enemies. In a nutshell, God is telling the Israelites to settle down and “bloom where you are planted.”

As he unpacks Jeremiah 29:4-11, Jordan uses his personal experiences to provide practical steps for the believer who may be caught between a rock and a hard place. He writes in a comfortable, conversational tone that puts the reader at ease. This is no surprise considering the fact that he is the director of Pastoral Care at one of the largest churches in Illinois. In addition to his pastoral care duties, Jordan has decades of experience preaching and is currently pursuing a Masters of Divinity degree from North Park Theological Seminary. This experience gives me confidence in his ability to interpret the text.

Jordan’s writing style and practical steps produce a book that can easily be read in one sitting. However, if you really want to be transformed, you will take your time reading and taking notes. (The book even provides space for notes after each chapter.) This passage from Jeremiah is one of my favorites because of the paradoxical message it presented to the Israelites. Jordan does it justice by skillfully taking a 6th century B.C. passage of scripture and explaining its relevancy to believers in the 21st century.

There were a couple of chapters that I could really relate to because I had similiar experiences. It really brought my experiences to mind and how it is that we really do have to wait on God when we pray and we feel like He does not hear us. God knows exactly when we are able to handle our situation and that is when He will show you that He hears you. Rev. Jordan did an excellent job of explaining how we are to bloom where God plants us.

Long but timeless story

Review of Dreams of the Red Mansion

The copy I read was a downloadable Kindle version. I could not figure out the translator. The total location number was 36403. If I use a recommended page-equivalent converter number of 16.69, the page number comes to a little over 2100, which is close to the printed full version page number.

At first, I couldn't understand how this book became one of the four pinnacles of classical Chinese literature. - The other three are: The Romance of the Three Kingdoms, Journey to the West, and Outlaws of the Marsh; all may have various different titles depending on the translation. - It starts out like a rather dull, uneventful, linear diary spiced with an occasional mystical dream of the main protégé, Bayou, an early teenage boy growing into young adulthood during the story. The details of his days and the days of a host of other main characters, mostly his relatives, are given in obsessive, almost painful details.

But dear Reader, don't be fooled by this slow start! Perhaps the following statement will demonstrate how the book grew on me: completing the first 20 % of the book took me more time than the rest of the 80%. The reason I hung on during these critical early pages was a fascinating look into a long-gone culture; a culture that until this day has been reflected in the life and mentality of nearly a third of the World's population - East and South-East Asia, to be exact -. If one has my kind of enthrallment with various cultures, the "boring" details throughout the book actually provide an exquisite opportunity to observe and learn.

In sharp contrast to the first part, around 50% into the reading the story accelerated and I had hard time putting down my Kindle. From here on, the life events of a few dozen main characters and countless minor participants became compelling. The story branched out into several exciting subplots only to be masterfully reunited in the final chapters.

The Jia is an old, noble family in the middle period of the Qing-Dynasty China. One of their greatest social achievements came when the Emperor chose their oldest daughter as a favorite concubine. When the family learned that their daughter had gotten permission from the Court to visit her parents, for her welcome they built a magnificent garden with several living quarters. The rest of the story took place mostly in this garden and the surrounding two mansions belonging to two branches of the Jias.

The main storyline focuses on the slow decline of this huge, influential family. However, there is an equally important second storyline running parallel with the first one as an organic component of it: Bayou's somewhat mystical spiritual awakening.
Most characters have multidimensional flesh-and-blood personalities without a hint of dogmatic profiling. The good, bad, and the ambiguous features are distributed among them with good sense, letting their vivid individualities shine through.

Poetry is an important part of the characters' lives. The book presents a good number of poems written by a few gifted family members. Although intellectually these poems gave me very little to hang on to, their moods nonetheless helped me understand the state of mind of those who wrote the poems and even the times they lived in.

Not unlike James Joyce's with his "stream of consciousness," the author gives the reader free access to the most inner thoughts of several major characters, most notably to Bayou's. This extra dimension of their personalities makes these characters even more intimate and accessible to the reader.

One thing I especially enjoyed in the book was learning about the multiple elements of the Qing Dynasty China interwoven in the story: the arranged marriages; concubines; the "dowager" cult - incidentally this latter largely contributed to the fall of China during Emperor Dowager Cixi's regency -; the bizarre look at suicide as an accepted and in fact frequently expected solution to life's problems; Chinese Medicine with its reliance on pulse evaluation; the system of feudalistic servants whose status was not much different from slaves but who could become highly valued members of the families - in the book represented by Xiren and Pinger -; the influence of Buddhism, Taoism, and Confucianism on every day life; the role of Chinese Opera in Chinese culture; the importance of jade in Chinese spirituality; etc.

One peculiarity that stood out for me in the book is the physical and psychological fragility of the Jia clan members. Frequent crying, mental derangement, suicide, and consumption - i.e. tuberculosis - abounded in this wealthy family. I could not find any historical information regarding the incidence of mental disease and tuberculosis in 18th century China but based on the story it surely seemed high. Or, was this family struck by an unusual genetic burden due to intermarriage? As an example, Bayou, who himself acted at times as a schizophrenic, other times as a depressed or autistic youngsters, married his first cousin.

In summary, this is a remarkable book for its documentation of an obscure historical time hardly accessible for most Westerners. It has a rich character set, the theme is timeless, and the intriguing subplots make it a persuasive reading. The book's length is due to exquisite details. On one side, these seemingly unnecessary details don't help much with the modern concept of story development yet, I would submit that they have other literary values. I can see that many potential readers will get discouraged to start or continue reading the book even after overcoming their reluctance due to the formidable page number. To such potential readers I would recommend reading one of the abridged versions readily available in popular bookstores.

..This novel is a world classic.

I first became acquainted with this 18th century novel years ago as the David Hawkes translation. I still consider that the gold standard. Despite its length, I've read it three times. This is not just a classic Chinese novel; it's a classic world novel that ranks with the very best literature of any culture or age. This particular translation, though I personally don't think it's as good as the David Hawkes translation, is certainly passable. I highly recommend this book to everyone!

A grand, immersive reading experience, one of the greatest novels

Probably the longest novel I've ever read, something like 2,500 pages. I read it at a slow pace, one chapter at a time, over a year-and-a-half. I picked up the book whenever the mood suited, in between several other books.

The author Cao Xueqin died before finishing the book, so another writer completed it for him. The book has 120 chapters, and I think the first 80 are written by Cao. Those are much better written than the latter chapters.

Despite the slow pace at which I read it, I absolutely LOVE this book. It's loaded with mystery, romance, family drama, comedy, poetry, and details of life in a large, affluent family in 18th Century China. It's a novel of manners, so you'll learn more about how the Chinese lived in middle Qing dynasty than any history book.

There are many versions available, so why this one? It was one volume, the English translation seemed OK, and it was inexpensive. I'm not even sure who the translator is. I compared it to a library copy of the David Hawkes/John Minford translation, and it was clear that Hawkes/Minford did a better job. When I read the book a second time (and I will) I'll go with Hawkes and Minford.

Nice book - KEEP THIS IN PERSPECTIVE

This is a nice free book put out by the Breville company. You get 10 recipes with photos of the chef responsible for the recipe and a video on how to make the recipe using one of the Breville company's products. Each video is only about 3 to 4 minutes long. The purpose is to help sell their products by helping you learn how to create a professional chef's recipe. This is an excellent book for 10 high quality, easy to create recipes. It's also a very nice marketing piece. Now you know what you're getting. I have a Breville juice fountain. I love the juicer. My only complaint is that it doesn't buy the produce and toss it in the hopper itself.

While many of these recipes seem chef level in appearance they are actually very achievable in any well equipped home kitchen. Even in my rural area most of the ingredients are available easily and alternatives are offered on a few of the recipes.

I've only had time to try two of the recipes so far but both were wonderfully tasteful and cleanup after cooking was minimal.

I read and re-read it and was so excited I ran out and bought ingredients for almost half the recipies. My family use it all the time now. My daughter is training to become a chef and is constantly in it lol
