This was just OK. I've read a number of books by this author, including the Virgin River series which has apparently given rise to this new Thunder Point series. Robyn Carr usually writes a pretty coherent and engaging story. This one isn't so great - perhaps it's because it's the first in a new series and she spends a lot of time building the setting and the large cast of characters. To be honest, most novels should stand alone, and I don't typically like having so many story lines and irrelevant characters that you feel like a pin ball zinging around inside of a machine.

The primary male lead, Cooper, is the "Wanderer". Never commits. Never settles in one place. Lives in a towable trailer and likes it that way. He ends up in Thunder Point to settle the estate of an old Army buddy. I never really warmed up to him. The female lead, Sarah, is a Coast Guard helicopter pilot, raising her teen-age brother, and recently divorced from a philandering husband. She's actually pretty likeable, but she scarcely appears in the story until well into the book. Then they connect with the intention of having a short-lived affair since Cooper plans to depart within a month or two. It never really develops. Since this is a romance novel, you know they aren't just going to part in the end, and so they don't. But, you also don't get the feeling that there's much there.

A lot of the dialogue just seemed to drag on and on, without adding much to the story. The plot is okay, but also a bit disjonted.

The most interesting characters, and the ones who are apparently going to be central to the ongoing series, are the Deputy Sherriff, Mac, and the waitress from the diner, Gina. I think the two of them probably get more "page time" in this story than Cooper and Sarah - certainly there's more character development. Apparently they will have their own story in a subsequent novel.

At any rate, this was just so-so. If you can borrow it from a friend or the library, perhaps it's worth a read. I'm not sure it's worth spending money on.

Another great series starting from one of my favorite authors...

I have been a fan of Robyn Carr's since I first read The House on Olive Street many years ago. And then I fell in love with her Virgin River series (I still want to move there).

Carr is a master raconteur. She has a talent for bringing characters alive and describing small-town life so well.

She has started a new series about the small coastal town of Thunder Point, Oregon, and allows us readers to peek into the lives of a few of its residents.

Cooper drives into town pulling his fifth wheel toy hauler. He is following up on a call that says his old friend Ben has died under mysterious circumstances. And he finds that Ben has left him a beat-up bar/bait shop/multi-purpose falling-down facility and 200 acres of prime beachfront property.

Sarah is a rescue helicopter pilot for the U.S. Coast Guard, has fairly recently gone through a nasty divorce, and has been raising her younger brother for years.

And these are just two of the fully developed characters that Carr lets us get to know intimately. Deputy Yummy Pants with kids of his own, Gina who works at the diner and who is raising a daughter, a new doctor in town, some slimeball teenage bullies...and more.

There are a few times that Virgin River is mentioned and the Riordan family and I was afraid I'd miss my old friends there but Carr has given us a new community to enjoy with a full cast of delightful characters inhabiting it. It is great fun and I am already looking forward to reading The Newcomer (Thunder Point) coming out in June 2013 and The Hero (Thunder Point) coming out in August 2013.

Slow Story

I am an avid fan of Robyn Carr and her Virgin River series, and as always she has great ambience and characters, but I felt the story dragged a bit in the beginning. I was also highly uncertain where the story was leading for the first quarter of the book. I wondered, where is the romance here? Once the main characters came together I was not disappointed in the chemistry between the two, but as I got to the end, I felt the story was still unfinished. All in all a good story, though not Robyn's usual slam dunk on this one. I'm hoping for better results on the next book in the series.

A lovely, satisfying romance

I really enjoyed this book. It is the story of Dorian, Earl of Rawnsley who believes he has inherited a disease of the mind and will die of madness within months. He is persuaded to marry Gwen, who is a doctor in every way, but ability to practice because she is a woman. The love story that blossoms between the two of them is sweet, loving and really what a romance novel is all about. There are some cameos from Lord of Scoundrels, especially the endearing Bertie. I wish it could have been longer. Loretta Chase writes with such heart and emotion. She is truly a cut above!

Wonderful HR novella with strong, intelligent and lovable characters, a great read!

I know that Loretta Chase is considered by many the Queen of Historical Romances, and though I read and loved Silk is for Seduction and instantly became a die hard fan of Loretta Chase, it seems too much time has gone by since, because it still surprised me what an amazing storyteller she is and how much I enjoyed The Mad Earl's Bride! I was craving something historical, this was a short novella, so I thought it would satisfy my craving, well I gobbled it up in a mere couple of hours and as usual another book of Loretta Chase left me smiling and feeling happy.

I haven't read any books from this Scoundrels series, so trust me The Mad Earl's Bride works wonderfully as a standalone story, don't fear feeling lost not having read the previous novels in the series.

The mad Earl in question is Dorian, the Earl of Rawnsley, who wants nothing else than to be left in peace in a remote cottage and spend the short time that is still left (since after seeing the madness descend and claim his mother knows that it will soon claim all his senses as well and time is running out) alone, away from society, people in tranquility. Well that tranquility is shot to hell when a fiery red-head woman envades her home to marry him and produce an heir before he succombs to illness! I quite liked the premise of the story and the well developed and lovable characters that Loretta Chase filled the story with. Dorian and Gwendolyn were such vivid and captivating characters I kept turning the pages, craving more of their interactions. (and Bertie, Gwendolyn's cousin and good and loyal friend to Dorian was so adorable as well.) Dorian's generous protective heart shone through even through his despair and darker moments and later when he allowed himself to enjoy his time with Gwen his love and tenderness, and respect for her were moving. Gwen was an admirable heroine. I loved that she was highly intelligent, brave and independent. She was no simpering miss, she was a strong woman to be lauded, a heroine to deserve respect and admiration. I also loved her dry sense of humour ;-)

The Mad Earl's Bride was full of heart-warming romance and chuckle out loud humour:

"Why did you bolt?" She asked.
"I took a lunatic fit." He trudged on.
"That often happens when one converses with Bertie for any length of time," she said.

"You are telling me," Dorian ground out, "that all this time . . ." His face heated. "All these months, I have been playing bloody tragic hero--and all I've got is a bleeding, damned headache?"

Verdict: The Mad Earl's Bride was a lovely, well written historical romance novella I enjoyed a lot. Both Dorian and Gwen were interesting and strong, passionate characters I could love and Loretta Chase's writing was once again stunning. I only have one complaint: and that is that I would have wanted this story to be longer! I didn't get nearly enough of Dorian and Gwen to satisfy my hunger for their story! ;-)

So if you are in the mood for a lovely and captivating historical romance story I urge you to pick up The Mad Earl's Bride, I'm sure you'll love it!

The Mad Earl's Bride~

When Gwendolyn Adams is asked to marry a man considered mad and soon to die, she takes it in stride and accepts the offer. By marrying the Earl of Rawnsley she will gain his name and position which will make it easier for her to accomplish her dream of opening a hospital. What she does not expect is to be drawn to this 'mad' earl. She researches his condition, and that of his late mother, and attempts to help him find ways to cure him. During there discussions together, this couple find a type of love they never thought possible. But with Dorian certain he is going to die, he tries to distance himself from Gwen while at the same time, encouraging her to discover as much as she can about medincine. He learned at a young age to keep his feelings to himself so these emotions he feels for the steady, level headed Gwen are new and a bit terrifying. The truth of Dorian's disease is revealed and watching this couple come to the new terms was enjoyable. Well written, emotional (the storyline is a bit dark) and sexy with a bit of humor, this novella was a treat to read! 4 stars

Now you can finally make those yummy vegetarian dishes yourself!!

This is a really fantastic recipe book - at the beginning there is great advice and information on getting adequate nutrition in order to have an overall healthy diet, for example Omega 3, calcium, iodine, iron etc, AND the foods that are rich in these nutrients. Also included is a pyramid nutrition guide and advice on getting the best nutrition from a vegetarian diet, plus the different types of vegetarian diets. The fact is, it IS easy enough to get all those nutrients from other sources besides meat.

At the end of each recipe is advice on the non-vegetarian variation of the recipe, for example adding chicken, fish or beef etc, which basically makes each recipe into two recipes, not one!

I'm a meat-eater, but have always had an interest in being more vegetarian (I never wished to cut it out completely however). I have a few friends who are vegetarians/vegans, and being an animal-lover I've always had an interest in being one myself (80-90% of the time), but never quite got around to it. It always seemed so difficult creating those tasty vegetarian dishes that are better for you, but still have the delicious flavors you love. I knew they existed though! I'd had them plenty of times before, at restaurants, or cooked by vegetarian/vegan friends. The problem was I didn't seem to be able to do it myself.

This recipe book has been an enormous help to me, I can tell you - I've already tried quite a few of the recipes and they have gone off without a hitch and tasted fantastic. I couldn't believe it was my own cooking! If, however, on a particular night I feel I would like to add some meat, just for variation, I can do that too!!

I'm even planning a vegetarian night with some friends to show off my new vegetarian cooking skills, and will definitely be recommending the book to them too. I will be keeping an eye out for any other recipe books from this author. Very highly recommended!!

More than happy with this book!

I am more than happy with this book!
Although I am not a true vegetarian, I don't really like to eat meat. But the thing is when I have to cook for somebody else as well, I am worried that the things I like will not be tasteful or attractive enough. So I noticed that lately I am reading recipes in magazines in search of new ideas.
This book solves it for me - I can have two versions of the same recipe, I can adapt it to my taste and the taste of others, the recipes are easily read, the ingredients are fresh and interesting, it is also inspiring as a conversation subject during a meal, overall I am completely happy and can't wait to start cooking!

Kudos to a great cookbook!

First of all, I must say that I AM the self-confessed "cookbook junkie" so every chance that I have to get a new one, I'm completely on it. I LOVE TO COOK!!

Secondly, being raised in a flexitarian home, I'm well acquainted with this dietary approach.

However, "Vegetarian Recipes For Meat Eaters - Vol 1" (just as is Vol 2) is more than a cookbook, but is also a guide for those who wish to make healthy changes in their dietary intake. The educational section is a great way to open this, but the recipes are perfect. I was especially grabbed by "Pepper and Sweet Onion Pastries with Pesto," "Crunchy Rice Squares with Avocado Salad," and "Cheese Polenta with Mushroom Rosemary Sauce." All of these are inventive and restaurant quality in their concepts.

If you're bored with meals that are the "same-old, same-old," then this is the book for you!!

Dearal Jordan describes his Waiting: How to Bloom Where You are Planted as “a practical guide for anyone who wants to learn how to be content in their present situation or to make the best out of a bad situation.” Unlike some writers, he is successful with delivering just what he promised. Waiting takes a look at a passage of scripture that is often quoted; unfortunately, it’s also often taken out of context.

Most people use Jeremiah 29:11 to encourage people who are approaching a time of transition in life, usually a graduating student. This verse assures us that God has good things in store for us, and that’s encouraging. However, a reading of the surrounding verses makes the promise even more impactful. If you are unfamiliar with this text, it addresses the children of Israel who have been captured and are now exiled in Babylon. Through the prophet Jeremiah, God sends a message of hope to the people; but not the kind of message you would expect to be delivered to a group in their situation. Instead of telling them that He will soon deliver them, God tells them that they will be exiled for seventy years. He then instructs them to do things like: build homes, plant gardens, marry off their sons and daughters and seek the peace and prosperity of the city where they reside with their enemies. In a nutshell, God is telling the Israelites to settle down and “bloom where you are planted.”

As he unpacks Jeremiah 29:4-11, Jordan uses his personal experiences to provide practical steps for the believer who may be caught between a rock and a hard place. He writes in a comfortable, conversational tone that puts the reader at ease. This is no surprise considering the fact that he is the director of Pastoral Care at one of the largest churches in Illinois. In addition to his pastoral care duties, Jordan has decades of experience preaching and is currently pursuing a Masters of Divinity degree from North Park Theological Seminary. This experience gives me confidence in his ability to interpret the text.

Jordan’s writing style and practical steps produce a book that can easily be read in one sitting. However, if you really want to be transformed, you will take your time reading and taking notes. (The book even provides space for notes after each chapter.) This passage from Jeremiah is one of my favorites because of the paradoxical message it presented to the Israelites. Jordan does it justice by skillfully taking a 6th century B.C. passage of scripture and explaining its relevancy to believers in the 21st century.

There were a couple of chapters that I could really relate to because I had similiar experiences. It really brought my experiences to mind and how it is that we really do have to wait on God when we pray and we feel like He does not hear us. God knows exactly when we are able to handle our situation and that is when He will show you that He hears you. Rev. Jordan did an excellent job of explaining how we are to bloom where God plants us.

A very easy book to read with note pages after each chapter where you can leave your thoughts. From introduction to conclusion a must read for all wanting more out of life. Learning how to Wait.
