During an attempted robbery in a Nebraska frontier town, a young storekeeper, Matt McKay kills the brother of a murderous gang leader, Jack Moss.
Fearing the outlaw's revenge, Matt's father takes him to Colorado and hires and once-feared gunfighter, Tom Patterson, to teach him the gun skills needed for self-defense and survival.
For a sizable sum of money, Patterson accepts the task even though he views the young man too gentle and innocent to survive a gun battle with an accomplished killer. On his rundown ranch high in the Rocky Mountains, the gruff, older gunslinger imposes days of gun-handling practices, hoping to instill a killer instinct in the easygoing Matt.
In the nearby rowdy mining town of Gold Stream, Matt has the opportunity to better understand the strengths and weaknesses of his mentor. In eventful situations, Patterson's friends and enemies make Gold Stream a site of entertainment and danger. With the threat of the Moss gang's retribution ever present, Matt and Tom Patterson form a bond of mutual respect and resolve as they await a fatal showdown.

Fearing for his son's life, the shopkeeper's father enlists the aid of a reclusive gunfighter to teach the boy how to handle a weapon. As he schools his pupil in the harder truths of the world, the gunfighter learns valuable lessons about himself, and both men embark on a journey that brings them as close as if they were father and son. It all sounds a little loopy, but the author, in his first western, pulls it off with panache. Although thematically gentle, the book is written in the tough, gritty, violent style of the classic pulp western. Fans of the genre will have a good time. David Pitt

Jerry S. Drake is a writer-director of film and video productions for corporate, educational and industrial clients. The Gunfighter's Apprentice is his first western novel. He has completed an action-adventure novel and is working on two other fiction projects. He lives near the Rocky Mountains in Westminster, Colorado.

Good read from a newcomer

The Gunfighter's Apprentice is a refreshing change amongst the standard western fare. The story is about a young man namded Matt who kills an outlaw's brother during a hold up attempt. His father delivers him to an over the hill gunfighter so that Matt can learn to defend himself when the older brother comes looking for him. Along the way there are several interesting characters that you really come to care about. Try this on out!

A Quick, Engaging and Entertaining Read With Well-Developed Characters, Action and Suspense in This Intriguing Tale! Enjoy!

Having been recently hooked on Craig Johnson’s modern day western series, “Longmire,” I was thinking how long it has been since I read an old western tale. Searching for an author I was not familiar with, I came across, Jerry S. Drakes, “Sierra Skullduggery.” A couple days after ordering it, I noticed a review on amazon.com that suggests that for greater enjoyment and familiarization with the characters the customers should readThe Gunfighter’s Apprentice first.
I took the reviewers advice, purchased the Kindle version and read The Gunfighter’s Apprentice and wait with anticipation for Sierra Skullduggery to arrive.
My first exposure to Jerry Drake was so entertaining, that I ordered the Kindle format of another of his western novels, “Breaking Trail” and will read it next.
Character, Tom Patterson is the “Gunfighter” while Matthew “Matt” McKay is his “Apprentice.”
Living on his own since he was 7 or 8 years old, growing up in Texas with no parents to speak of, Tom Patterson did odd jobs doing whatever he needed to do to survive. Following his service in the Civil War as a Confederate soldier—the experience that taught him how to handle a pistol—his reputation grew while he worked both sides of the law.
To escape and avoid the side effects of his fame, this tale begins with this flawed character living in his ranch house, in dire need of repairs, some 3 miles from a scanty mining town called Gold Stream, in the Rocky Mountain high country miles away from Denver, Colorado.
Miss Betty, a run-a-way at 15 from a poor and dysfunctional Kentucky family stays at the ranch with Tom hoping to become more than his lover and a bargirl working alongside her younger and bawdier coworkers at the Gold Strike Saloon owned by Joseph “Joe” Calvecci and locate called Gold Stream, Colorado.
The story is initially set in 1876 Nebraska City, Nebraska where general storekeepers, Matthew “Matt” McKay and his dad Ezra run into trouble.
Jared Moss, the drunk and arrogant younger brother of notorious outlaw, gang leader and killer, Jack Moss, meets his maker at the hands of Matt during an attempted robbery.
In an effort to give his son a fighting chance of survival in an inevitable show down once Jack Moss learns of his brother’s fate, Ezra searches for someone to teach Matt gunfighter skills. Enter “The Gunfighter,” Tom Patterson.
There are plenty of bad guys that the two will have to deal with beside Jack Moss and his second in command, Bob Daly. The young roughneck gunslinger, Bill Deiter and his older heavy set back shooting associate, Merle Varney also come to mind.
Another is thug, “Dutch Snyder” the self appointed Gold Stream town marshal who is tough on the weak and happy drunks, but nowhere to be found when there is real trouble.
The Gunfighter’s Apprentice was a quick, engaging and entertaining read. The author does a great job developing interesting characters, action and suspense in this intriguing tale.
My best guess is that fans of this genre will be entertained and satisfied with this novel and will pick up the author’s subtle clues for things to come anticipating the next ride with the characters Jerry S. Drake treated us to herein.

A good read...

Jerry Drake is a good storyteller--I could see the characters and scenes in my head while reading. I'd like to see a sequel--(I'd specify about what, but I don't want to give this story away!)
