Fall of Five - the lull before the storm

Come one, come all to Fouke, Arkansas' Monster Mart - you must've seen the online adverts - and take a peek at the infamous Boggy Creek Monster, the creature what's part man, part bear, and part gorilla. And maybe you can even catch a glimpse of Number Five, the final surviving member of the Garde we've yet to meet. In Fouke, Arkansas, outside Monster Mart, is where John and Six find him moments before the Mogadorian troops descend. And when the skirmish ends and the dust settles and you look at the blasted bits of Arkansas landscape, there's only one thing to say: "Fouke!"

THE FALL OF FIVE is the fourth book in the Lorien Legacies saga, and why would you think the author(s) would take the foot off the pedal? Sure, there are moments of respite. Even these alien teens need to catch their breath. But I love the overall pacing of the book. And those times when things do pick up, the pace achieves this hurtling locomotion. As the book opens, the Garde is back in Chicago and has sort of recovered from their collective butts getting handed to them by Setrákus Ra, terrifying leader of the Mogadorians. Some of the kids are getting restless (looking at you, Nine) and are once more, to quote an older generation, full of beans. John Smith a.k.a. Number Four - now the team's uncontested leader - decides to sanction a field op to go fetch the elusive Number Five.

I never thought I'd say this - and maybe this'll touch off a raw nerve - but the last time I was this invested in a YA series with such a huge cast, it was Harry Potter. I care what happens to John Smith and to Six and Marina and the others (yes, even Nine who somehow grew on me). The story doesn't waste time in picking up a plot thread that had been dangling since the end of THE POWER OF SIX. "Pittacus Lore" - of whom collaborators Jobie Hughes and James Frey deny knowledge - weaves in some nice character beats. The characters' distinct personalities make for dramatic (and combustible) interplay. For example, Nine's innate combativeness plays off in interesting ways against Four's take-charge mentality and Eight's fun-loving nature. It's also gratifying that John's human girlfriend, Sarah Hart, evolves into someone who can handle herself in a melee. So, yeah, it says something positive that I don't at all mind those scenes in which the Garde are just hanging out in Nine's massively tricked-out Chicago penthouse, whether squabbling or fretting, training, or striking up friendships.

Make no mistake, this series' calling card is the epic, cinematic fighty fight. It's when that crazy superhero flavor really kicks in, and you salivate about seeing this transferred to the big screen. (Is it too masochistic to hope for a film sequel or a remake? Teresa Palmer as "Six" was awesome!)

Fourth book in a projected set of seven, FALL OF FIVE resolves a plot thread or two but then introduces several new story arcs (the intro of Five, Ella's crippling nightmares, a surprising Mogadorian, etc.). More is revealed about the Garde's legacies and the contents of their heritage chests. You should anticipate a doozy of a cliffhanger. You should realize that these stories wouldn't mean as much if there weren't shattering consequences. The narrative is told from the alternating perspectives of John Smith, Marina, and Sam Goode. If you're as immersed into the story as I was, you won't have any trouble keeping track of who's narrating at any given moment. I did note a few grammatical lapses, but, mostly, the editor's been on his P's and Q's. FALL OF FIVE had me tearing thru the pages, even during those slower "day in the life" moments. And when things do heat up, it's such a propulsive read. "Pittacus Lore" advances the narrative well enough and develops further story conflicts that should keep the series from going stale. Don't be surprised if your heart breaks a little.

Strongest and best series I have read.

I loved this book. I feel like it had a lot of suspense throught and I never felt bored. Has a lot of fast passed action wich made it very hard to put down a quality had to find in books no and which I LOVE!
Noticed that most of the bad reviews this book got we're from people dissapointed in some of the results. C'mon guys, they are fighting a war! Can't expect it to be all unicorns and rainbows!

Worth the Read

Having read all of the series so far, they keep getting better and keep you on the edge of your seat. Written for teens, adults will enjoy too. No sex or bad language, just a really great plot and read. Even my husband enjoys the series. Both of us are retired.
Highly recommend for anyone of any age.

uplifting and inspiring

What a great collection of devotionals written by the members of one church famiy. There is such a wide range of thought-provoking one-page devotionals written by over 100 different people. Meditating on the thoughts that each person shares is an enjoyable way to start the day and it gives me something spiritual and meaningful to think about. I am impressed with the variety of topics, and of authors. The youngest contributer was just 4 years old and the oldest in their 90s. I loved that there are short bios of each person so you can know a little about the person who wrote each devotional. Definitely one of my favorite daily devotional books.

"Speaking From the Heart" devotional book

This is such a unique devotional book! I love that it includes thoughts from so many different people. This makes it really special and very different from similar books I've seen. This book includes a wide variety of thoughts and life prospectives, but it is obvious all the contributors have a common goal...living the best Christian life they can and encouraging others to do the same! I also love that these daily devotionals are just from regular Christian people. Reading this book feels like encouragement in book form from over 100 different Christian friends! Although it was written by members of the church of Christ, I believe any person trying to live a Christian life would TRULY enjoy this book. I would highly reccommend buying it for yourself and it would make a GREAT gift as well!!

Forgotten Son... Where to begin. You could call it a spin-off from the Destroyer series, or a natural continuation of one of the more interesting reoccurring subplots from the middle of the series. It's not a reboot, but it is a modern take on the series. This book is designed for a new generation of fans, but still has plenty of appeal for the regular series devotee. It's the first in a new series, based on the branch of Sinanju located on an American Indian reservation. The "Sun On Jo" tribe is the American corollary to the N. Korean fishing village of Sinanju. Poor, in the middle of nowhere, obscure and almost forgotten. The Korean branch of the family lives on the shores of a cold, unforgiving sea. The American branch in the midst of the hot, unforgiving desert. Forgotten Son delves into this history, how the American branch came to be, and why there are two children of Remo Williams living - and training - there. This is cleverly interwoven with the book's plot, and leaves the reader wanting more - a lot more. If you're a long time Destroyer fan, you'll find plenty of nods to the early training of Remo. Peak, breathing, circulation, smoking and more. You don't have to be a reader of the original series to enjoy these books, and that's the point. This is a stand-alone, entirely new series.

The key to any good adventure book is a worthy villain. Think the first (original) Star Trek movie - then think Wrath of Kahn. This time it's a shadowy organization with their own twisted world vision. To attain that nefarious goal, they have been secretly manipulating mankind for millennia (mwohahaha.) America is the one country that seems beyond their grasp. So they enlist one of their key weapons to subvert the USA - Mexican drug cartels. One thorn in the side of the largest cartel is a remote Indian tribe near the border - Sinanju. This paints a bulls-eye on the village of Sinanju, Sunny Joe, Stone and Freya. But this target is loaded with surprises.

Sunny Joe Roam has trained Stone Smith and his half-sister Freya Williams in the Art of Sinanju - but they are both just beginning their long journey with the Sun Source of all martial arts. Stone won't quit smoking - since proper breathing is the key to Sinanju, he's his own worst enemy. His sister, Freya is a natural at the art, but reckless. Together they are a fantastic - if inexperienced - team. Both wind up working for a new top secret government agency, created by another top secret agency - one so carefully hidden that only handful of people know it exists. Smith, Remo and Chiun have little to do with this new series, except to provide some history. They receive mention (Smith more so) but that's it. This is all about the new agency run by Ben Cole, his Sinanju agents Stone and Freya, and the American Sinanju tribe.

There's plenty of action, humor and mayhem. The cartel can't seem to sneak over the border, past the Indian tribe. Their hired killers just disappear. So it's time to send in the pros. In this case, the pros equal dressing up the cartel enforcers as Ninjas and sending them up against Sinanju. The entire episode is hilarious - with deadly results. For El Ninja. Yes, it's way past being politically correct. Washington is inhabited by idiots (that's pretty close to the mark, actually), the Mexican cartels are run by stereotypical evil doers, and the book never takes itself too seriously. It's Warren Murphy and Gerald Welch at their best.

If you like a good adventure romp with page-turning action, fantastic characters, and sprinkled liberally with biting humor, then this is a don't miss.

Legacy- A Review- Book One- Forgotten Son
Legacy is a great new series by Warren Murphy and Gerard Welch featuring Remo Williams (The Destroyer) son and daughter. I vaguely remember his daughter Freya from many years ago, but his son, `Stone' I have no recollection of. Be that as it may, `Forgotten Son' is a novel about both offspring of the greatest master of Sinanju and their quest given to them by a man named Ben Maugaine, who is a former Mossad agent. Whether he knows it or not, Ben has been `hired' by Smith, Remo's superior in CURE to run a new offshoot of that organization. He is basically Stone and Freya's handler.
Stone is an Ex-Seal team member who has finally started his Sinanju training, though I question how serious he is about it, since he has not given up smoking. Freya on the other hand is dead serious about it and only fifteen years of age. He grandfather, Remo's father, Bill `Sunny Joe' Roam, has trained her since Remo left her with him some time ago. She is much further along with her training then Stone is and shows it throughout the novel. Also, much of the story takes place on the Sinanju Indian reservation.
This book has all of the biting political commentary that I love about the Destroyer books, as well as the fantastic action. Remo and Chiun DO appear, but only as background characters and never actually have speaking parts within this story. It's all about Stone and Freya.
Even more interesting is the debut of a new enemy, a group claiming to be centuries old and actually to be behind the workings of everything in the world, all aiming the world towards their own goals. A sort of `super Illuminati', who claim that they actually controlled that group as well. They make for an exceptional opponent that I hope will be around for a while.
Everything worked here, especially considering what this book is, which is an origin story for an all new hero and heroine. I'm actually looking forward to seeing Stone's training over time in this series.
Bill Roam was a forgotten character for me and it was nice to see him again with such a starring role in this series.
All in all this series is off to an excellent start and it gives me something else to read. The Destroyer series will always be my number one choice, but this new series is an absolutely welcome addition. If only I could remember who Stone's mother was, or when he was introduced before this, that's the only issue I had with this story.

Where the hell is #2?

I've been collecting Destroyer books for a while now, but hadn't gotten around to reading them until a few year ago. I was surprised when I started with #8: Summit Chase. The book had me laughing out loud while reading, and I love a book that can make me laugh. So anytime I need a quick, fun/funny read, I grab a Destroyer.

Legacy: Forgotten Son by Warren Murphy and Gerald Welch is the start of a new series in the Destroyer universe (I've seen the word reboot or remake applied to this book, but it isn't either in my opinion, since Remo and Chuin are still alive and kickin'. This is more a spin-off.). The story follows two of Remo's children, Stone and Freya, as they are sent out on a mission for the first time. The story was somewhat basic, but it is elevated by the characters.

To me Stone is a very interesting Destroyer character. Unlike his father, Stone is not unstoppable. One problem with the Destroyer books for me is that Remo and Chuin were just too damn unstoppable. The books would build up a great villain. I would spend the book waiting for the final showdown, and the villain would then be dispatched way too easily. Stone on the other hand, is a smoker, which as the surgeon general warns has detrimental effects on your health. In Stone's case, his breathing, which Destroyer fans will know is the key component of Sinanju. Stone also uses a gun, which was a surprise to me. So I find Stone a very interesting main character for this series.

Freya, his half sister, has been trained since birth and is more deadly than Stone. Beautiful and deadly, Freya also has some interesting story to her that I won't spoil here. I'll just say I'm very interested to learn more about her.

The book is a light and quick read (I brought it to work and had it finished before the end of the day). Highly recommended for Destroyer fans, fans of funny books, or fans of action novels.

The only thing left to ask is this: where the hell is #2?

I bought this cookbook on a friend's recommendation, and have loved everything I have tried so far. Our family life is really busy and so I am always looking for yummy food that is quick and easy to prepare. My family loved the Mexican Cornbread Salad and the Foil Packet Chicken. The Margarita Cake received lots of praise!! Next on my list to try is the Apple Spice Bars. Great recipes!!

nice but too short

The Story was nice and sweet but too short, just 1496 Kindle Loc (only 87% of the book anyway; rest preview) is really to short for this kind of price. I like T.A. Chase, one of my favourite authors by now.

Because the story is so very short the plot moves also quite fast, maybe too fast for my taste. The sudden ending is also a disappointment for me, I would think the story to start not end and this point.

So although I fell in love with all 3 characters I feel disappointed.
I wouldn't have bought it knowing it would be that short.

Frustratingly short

This story, while nicely "hot" and interesting, suffers from being vastly overpriced for the length. It's exceedingly short, only 34 pages or 87% of the file; the remainder is taken up by a preview for another story. Though I liked the scenes and very brief story shown, I never would have bought this book at this price ($5.62) if I'd known in advance just how short it was - it actually reads as if it was a prologue/excerpt to a longer story.

So, while the story is good, I am disappointed in my purchase.

TWO FOR ONE is a sexy, romantic, love-at-first sight, unconventional romance.

Simon and Brady have been together for years. When they first got together they liked to invite others into their bed for a little play; now that they're older they find themselves looking for something more than play. Jack is new in town and looking for a fresh start and some fun. Thanks to his last partner, Jack is lacking in the self-confidence department, so he is surprised when sexy Brady hits on him in a bar. He is even more surprised when he discovers sexy Brady comes with a sexy Simon--and they are both interested in him.

This book is definitely hot. The immediate physical attraction is intense, leading to steamy and passionate bedroom (and other places) moments. But there is also an immediate emotional attachment, with these three men feeling drawn together and wanting to take care of one another. It is always a challenge to feel connected to characters in short stories as there isn't much time for character building. While I felt some of that with this book, I felt the author did a good job of offering brief personal snippets to connect the reader with the characters.

This book had all of the elements I enjoy--love, steam, and success of an unconventional romance.

Cute Story

I have the whole set of Heart of the West Series and they all have been cute reads. However, this one I couldn't warm up to Madison at all . I thought she was cold and manipulative. I couldn't believe while they were making love she kept at him to sign to her Ad Agency. That was really tacky. Another reviewer talked of Chance ranting and raving but I felt he had the right. He was used and manipulated the whole way. Well as in all romances, they end up figuring it out and getting married but I still just couldn't warm to the heroine.

A Baby by Chance

Great story - read it in one sitting. Madison Burnes is a glamorous, sexy lady executive and is after Chance Cartwright a good looking no nonsense cowboy who trains horses at his a ranch in Wyoming to do a commerical for a SUV for her ad agency. He wants nothing to do with it and has told her so. She buys him for a weekend at a local bachelor charity auction and thats when the action starts. He takes her back to his ranch with every intention of letting her know he will not do the commerical that she wants him to do (she thinks she can talk him into doing it). After a night of passion he agrees to do it, so she heads back to Texas to start the ball rolling to film the ad at his ranch. After a couple of weeks go by Madison realizes she is pregnant with Chance's baby. She returns to his ranch and tells him about the baby. Most of the storyline then takes place at the ranch filming the ad with Chance's ranting and raving, dealing with their similiar problems in their pasts, careers, and finally acknowledging their love for each other. This is another book I picked up that is part of a series called Heart of the West - I will definitely have to read the other nine books in this series ASAP.
