Smart, Clever and Engaging

This is pretty short even for a short story, but it's long enough to give you a good sense of this series and of the heroine. Since it's currently a Kindle freebie you could think of it as a really nice, long self contained sample.

This series seems to be much more of a school days/girlfriends/romance effort than a mystery series, but that's O.K. because it does what it does very well. Our heroine, Dani Spevak, is a talented ballet student at Mountain Shadows, a performing arts boarding school. She has friends, enemies, and frenemies. She has a sort of boyfriend, who is an actor on the verge of stardom. She has to stress about school, her boyfriend, her career, and her love life. Every now and then she stumbles across a crime victim and finds herself in the middle of another mystery.

Dani is an engaging protagonist. She is a combination of talent, confidence and vulnerability. She is a reliable narrator with a self-deprecating sense of humor. She has not been created with a lot of quirks or with any burdensome backstory, so the whole impression she leaves is fresh and spirited.

This very comfortable vibe is complemented by the fact that her friends are catty, but funny-catty and talking trash for laughs and giggles. Even the bad guy mean girls are "mean light", in that their comments aren't deep and don't score. I'm not a fan of the mean girls books where the emotional damage being handed out is uncomfortably real. Being a teen is hard enough without having to feel sorry for fictional victims.

This light tone is sustained by the plots and the general flow of the action. For example, there is a running joke throughout the series based on the "Twilight" saga. Here, there is a "Midnight" hit series penned by Bethany Beyer, an alum of Dani's school. It involves a vampire, a werewolf and a girl. Dani's actor boyfriend has the Robert Pattinson role in the movie version that's being filmed. This setup allows for a running set of snarky comments about the whole "Twilight" phenomenon. It's sort of an inside joke between the author and her readers, which seems to me to set just the right tone for a book like this. In the same vein there are cutting edge pop culture references on practically every page, which makes the books practically a quiz on daily events for the alert reader. I don't know if that will help these books age well or will condemn them to early obsolescence, (will readers in 2023 know who Lady Gaga is/was?), but for now they add a lot of interest.

So, they're light, fun, clever and engaging. Sometimes that's just what you want, and these books honestly deliver.

I've enjoyed all of Amanda Brice's stories! Great heroines and entertaining storylines keep you engaged from page one until the last word. The dance themes are lots of fun, too!

informationDame Barbara Cartland (9th July 1901 - 21st May 2000)
was the world's most prolific author and is still constantly mentioned in the Guinness Book of Records. She wrote no less than 723 books in her lifetime of which 644 were her wonderful romantic novels and the remaining 79 were historical biographies, cookery and lifestyle books.

What is truly extraordinary is that when her publishers in 1977 demanded more and more Barbara Cartlands for her adoring public, she doubled her output at the age of 77 from ten books a year to over twenty. She averaged twenty books a year for twenty years and actually wrote her last book when she was 97.

So she wrote 400 books between the ages of 77 and 97, a feat no one has ever achieved in the past and is most unlikely to do in the future. To date five of her romances have been made into feature films.

Her publishers published 240 of the 400 romances, but even they could not keep up with Barbara, so when she died in 2000 she left 160 unpublished books, which are now all being published as the 'Barbara Cartland Pink Collection' at the rate of one a month by her son Ian as a tribute to his amazing mother.

In 1991 Barbara was invested with a Dame of the British Empire by Her Majesty the Queen for her services to literature.

This year is the tenth anniversary of Barbara's death and to mark the date Ian is re-publishing in October Barbara Cartland's first book "Jig-saw" as an exact replica of the original 1925 edition, which was an international bestseller at the time.

"My mother achieved so much in her long and active life," says Ian, "but her greatest legacy of all was the happiness and joy she brought to so many millions of people throughout the world with her wonderful romantic stories of true love and happy endings."

As a fan of BC I can only say that this book was a big disappointment! I found the story as well as the characters boring. There was nothing special about this couple and found the story stale.

The sand dunes were nearly blinding in the late-June sunshine, but that didn't stop the surge of adrenaline that raced through Seth Hawkins as he pulled his pickup to a halt and cut the engine.

Deadman's Dunes. It had been almost a year since he'd been back here in the small Oklahoma town of Amber Lake to enjoy not only the company of his sister and niece, but also the thrill of conquering the dunes.

Seth pulled on a pair of goggles against the sun's glare and then got out of his truck. As far as the eye could see the dunes rose up like an alien landscape located seven miles outside town.

In the distance he could hear the roar of quad and other ATV engines and knew he wouldn't have the dunes to himself. Not that it mattered, there was plenty of room for everyone.

He'd driven here from his home in Kansas City early that morning and had a leisurely lunch with Linda and Samantha, his sister and niece, but he'd been eager to get out here on the dunes where nothing mattered but the throttle beneath his hand and the elemental challenge between man and nature.

It took him only minutes to unload his dirt bike from the back of the truck. As he strapped on his protective equipment and then pulled on his helmet, he drew in a deep breath of the fresh warm air.

For the next week he wasn't FBI Special Agent Seth Hawkins—he was simply Seth on vacation, visiting with his only relatives and enjoying some much needed downtime from the job.

He climbed on the dirt bike and kick-started it, the thrum of the engine filled him with a teenagelike excitement. It felt as if in the past couple of years there had been nothing but work, no time for anything but murder and mayhem. He needed this vacation and he intended to spend each and every moment of it just having fun and relaxing.

With this thought in mind, he released the clutch and shot forward, the sand shifting ever ominously beneath his tires as he approached the first dune and after that miles of more dunes that would eventually lead to the large hump that was Deadman's Bluff.

A hairpin turn at the crest of the hill had to be maneuvered with precision. Otherwise the rider would fly off the bluff and to the sand fifteen feet below. More than one rider had tasted that sand at the bottom of Deadman's Bluff, although Seth himself had never had the unpleasant experience.

As he flew over the first mound, exhilaration spiked and he would have grinned, but knew that gesture would only get him a mouthful of sand.

He saw the tracks that others had left before him and saw in the distance several riders on quads who were obviously riding together.

Seth hadn't visited Amber Lake often enough over the years to get to know the locals. He tried to come and visit his sister every six months or so, especially since her contentious divorce five years ago, but most of the time it was just an overnight visit.

But he was here now for a wonderful week and intended to take full advantage of having nothing more on his mind than dinner and dunes.

He'd been riding about a half hour when he spied the other three riders in the distance, all stopped and off their vehicles near an area referred to as the whoop-ti-doos, tiny bumps set so close together they rattled your brain. The young men looked like they were freaking out, two of them jumping around while the third stood as if frozen into a statue.

Was the young man who wasn't moving hurt? Had he taken a tumble and was now in a state of shock? Seth turned his bike to head toward them and as he drew closer he could hear two of the male voices shouting above the whine of his engine.

Seth pulled up, cut his engine and pulled off his helmet and goggles. "In the sand.. " It was a short, dark-haired young man who shouted at Seth. "There's a dead woman in the sand."

What? Seth dropped his helmet on the ground, wondering if this was some kind of stupid prank the three were playing on him. He walked over to where statue man stood staring down at the sand just in front of him. Seth followed his gaze and gasped in shock.

A pale face in the sand, a woman's face, partially visible with her eyes closed. Obviously a dead woman, Seth's brain processed as the shock quickly passed.

"Any of you have a cell phone?" he asked, having left his own in his truck.

"It's freaky," the blond boy exclaimed as he wore a path back and forth in the sand. "Jeez, who would do something like that?"

"A phone," Seth barked. "Anyone have a phone?" The tall, frozen man stumbled back a couple of steps and pulled a phone from his pocket.

"Call for help," Seth commanded as he took a step closer to the body. "All three of you get over there by my bike."

The last thing he wanted was for everyone to trample what was obviously a crime scene. Whoever the woman was, she hadn't willingly lain down in the sand and buried herself. However, as an FBI agent he wanted to get closer, assure himself she was dead despite the obvious.

"The sheriff is on his way," one of the guys said.

As Seth approached the woman, he was vaguely aware of the three others talking among themselves, their voices all holding a barely contained edge of hysteria.

There was no question the scene was disconcerting. There was no indication of her body beneath the sand, simply a face half-emerged from the sandy surface, like some art sculpture left behind by a mentally ill artist.

Careful not to step where he assumed her body must be, Seth knelt down at the side of the face and swept away some of the sand that covered her closed eyes.

In all of his years as an FBI agent working violent crimes, he'd never seen anything like this, and he'd certainly seen a lot of evil things.

He brushed a bit more sand away from her eyes and froze as he thought one of her eyelids twitched. A trick of the sun? He touched her skin. Warm…warmed by the heat of the day or by blood still flowing through her veins?

Quickly he dug through the sand by her neck, seeking the place where he might find a pulse. It took him only seconds to find her pulse point and place his fingers against it. He nearly yelped in surprise as he felt the beat of life throbbing there.

"She's alive," he yelled. "Get over here and help me. We've got to get this sand off her."

Two of the three ran to help Seth as he began to scoop sand away from her neck and her chest. As he worked on her upper body the other two men worked on her thighs and legs. The tall young man appeared to be in some state of shock still, standing like a robot in front of Seth's dirt bike.

"Hey, call the sheriff back and tell him we need an ambulance," Seth instructed the robot. "And tell him to hurry."

"This is so freaky…so freakin' freaky," the dark-haired man said as he uncovered a jean-clad leg.

"Are you sure she's alive?" the other one asked as he worked on getting the last of the sand off her other leg.

It all felt like a weird dream to Seth. As she was freed of the sand, his mind clicked off details. She was dressed in worn jeans and a blue T-shirt. One foot wore a gold sandal, the other one was bare. Her hair was dark, although it was so embedded with sand it was hard to discern an exact color.

"Sheriff Atkins is here," one of them said in relief.

Seth didn't look up from the woman. Once again he sought the side of her neck to assure himself that she was still breathing. At that moment her eyes flew open.

Bright blue, they connected with Seth for one long moment. Before Seth could react, she skittered backward like a crab, her pupils dilating as her eyes filled with an abject terror Seth knew he'd never forget.

"It's okay. You're safe now," Seth said as she continued an attempt to escape, her eyes darting around wildly, like a crab seeking a rock to hide under.

As she moved she made sounds that no human being should ever make, the sound of terror too great for words. She got about three feet away from them and then with an audible moan, she collapsed.

By that time the sheriff had joined them. "FBI Agent Seth Hawkins," he said quickly. "We called for an ambulance," he added curtly. "We've got a crime scene and a live victim here who needs immediate medical care."

"We only have two ambulances who serve this area and both of them are currently working a four-car pile-up on the other end of town," the sheriff said as he raked a hand through his salt-and-pepper hair.

Seth immediately assessed that the man appeared not to know exactly how to proceed. "We've got to get her to the hospital now." Seth took control.

"Hey." He focused on the dark-haired young man who'd helped uncover the victim. "You know where Linda and Samantha Willoughby live?" He shook his head, but the taller blond nodded. "I do," he replied. Seth threw him his truck keys. "Load my bike and drive my truck to their place. Put the keys under the floor mat."

Seth turned to the sheriff. "We're going to put her in the back of your car and you're going to drive us to the emergency room as quickly as possible. And you might want to contact some of your men to cordon off this scene so there's no more contamination."

He didn't wait to see if anyone followed his orders. Instead he approached the unconscious woman and bent down next to her. He was aware that by picking her up, that by transporting her in the back of a car, he might be doing more harm than good, but her pulse had been weak and thready and he didn't want to wait around for an ambulance that might never come.

He saw no visible wounds on her, no blood to indicate she had been wounded with a knife or by a gunshot. He knelt down beside her and gently scooped her up in his arms and then stood.

She was a tiny thing, short and slender and even though she was deadweight in his arms, he had no problem carrying her to the sheriff's car.

The local lawman hurried in front of him and opened the back door to his cruiser. Once Seth and the woman were in the backseat, the overweight sheriff quickly made his way to the driver's side.

He slid into the car and started the engine and only when they were driving away from the dunes did he radio in location and instructions for somebody named Raymond to grab a couple of men and get their butts out there as quickly as possible to protect the crime scene.

As he talked on the radio, Seth stared down at the woman in his arms. What had happened to her? How had she come to be buried in the dunes?

Despite the sand that clung to her, she was very pretty, with long dark lashes and a hint of cheekbones and shapely lips that at the moment hung slack and partially open.

He thought he'd never forget that moment when her eyes had first opened, when for just a moment her gaze had connected with his. In that first instant, he'd felt electrically charged, as if her eyes had held an appeal he had to answer.

It had lasted only a heartbeat before the terror of whatever she'd endured had obviously coursed through her, momentarily stealing away anything human inside her. She'd been a wild animal seeking escape.

"By the way, I'm Sheriff Tom Atkins," the older man said from the front seat. "What's an FBI agent doing in my town?"

"I'm here on vacation visiting my sister and niece, Linda and Samantha Willoughby. I just got into town this morning."

"Hell of a way to start a vacation," Atkins said.

"This woman is definitely having a worse day than me," Seth replied. "Do you know her?"

"I don't recognize her and this is a pretty small town where most faces are familiar to me."

Seth once again looked down at the broken woman in his arms. "Hopefully when she comes to she'll be able to tell you who she is and how she came to be buried in the sand. I'm assuming you'll question thoroughly the boys at the scene. They are not only potential witnesses but also potential suspects, as well."

"They'll be brought in for questioning." That was all Atkins said as they pulled up to the emergency room entrance. Seth lifted the woman out of the car and carried her in where he was relieved of his burden by an orderly with a cart.

Within seconds, the woman was taken back behind doors that forbade Seth's entry. Sheriff Atkins had disappeared, probably headed back to the crime scene.

Seth sank down in one of the plastic chairs in the waiting room and drew a couple of deep, steadying breaths. He felt as if he'd been flying on a sickening surge of adrenaline since the moment he'd seen that haunting face in the sand.

He looked up as he saw his sister hurrying down the hallway toward him, her blue scrubs looking crisp and clean. Linda worked as a nurse and had left for her shift here at the hospital when Seth had left her house for the dunes.

"Hey," she said as she approached.

"Hey yourself," he replied with a soft smile. At thirty-eight Linda was three years older than him, but the two siblings had always been unusually close, especially since Linda had gone through her divorce from her domineering, verbally abusive husband, Mark.

She sat down next to him. "I heard the strangest story in the break room a few minutes ago. I heard that you went out dirt-bike-riding and wound up here with a woman you dug out of the sand."

He nodded. "Strange, but true."

"A couple of months ago another young woman was found dead in the dunes," Linda said. Seth sat up straighter in his seat, his questions obvious in his eyes as Linda continued. "Apparently some of the teenagers in town decided to have a party out there. From the story I heard there was a lot of booze, some drugs and at the time that the woman was discovered Sheriff Atkins thought it was some kind of a freak accident resulting from partying."

Seth frowned. "This today definitely wasn't an accident." His frown deepened as he thought about the scene. "She couldn't have been there that long before I got to the dunes. It was almost like she'd been intended to be completely buried but something or someone chased the killer away before he could deliver the final shovelful of sand onto her face." He wondered if perhaps the three young men who had arrived at the dunes before him had interrupted the murderer or had buried her themselves.

Linda reached over and patted his hand. "Go home, Seth. This isn't your crime scene. Remember, you're on vacation." She stood. "And I'm not, so I've got to get back to work. I'll see you at home late tonight."

He nodded absently and watched as she disappeared back down the hallway. She was right. This wasn't his job. He'd done what he needed to do and there was nothing to keep him from walking away.

Except those startling blue eyes and that moment of connection he felt with her before she'd freaked out and then had passed out. He couldn't just head home and forget about all of this. Besides, he thought with a touch of humor, he had no way to get home.

He had no doubt that the kids from the dunes would see to it that his truck and bike got back to Linda's okay. This was a small town and if they screwed with his rides, there would be no place for them to hide.

Scene of the crime

A young woman is found buried in Oklahoma sand dunes - alive. FBI agent Seth Hawkins was taking some time out on his dirt bike, but now he's involved in something major, because this girl wasn't the first to be attacked. Recovering, the traumatised girl can't remember her name or what happened. She's given a guest room where Seth is staying with his sister and the investigators hope she'll be able to help them later.

Seth marshals the resources available and tries to track down, not just the attacker, but the surviving girl's identity. Because the killer will want to strike another woman, and he may see the one who got away as a threat. Eventually the girl recalls her name - Tamara. Protecting a material witness is one thing, but Seth finds himself responding to Tamara on a personal basis, despite the fact that it's inappropriate while working her case. The local media have given the killer the name of the Sandman and everyone begins to suspect everyone else.

Carla Cassidy has done a good job of portraying the fragility but resilience of the plucky survivor and the detailed work of the ongoing investigation. With three cases open for the agent, connections are noted and even family members need to be questioned. Crime fans will be determined to solve the mystery by themselves.

What I didn't like... Very predictable. I was 90% certain who the killer was the first time he made an appearance in the book. I don't see how the two main characters didn't. It didn't make sense to me why the hero would bring the heroine to a family members house, knowing a killer is after her, & two of the family members fit the appearance of all the killer's victims. I like the whole amnesia thing but the things that triggered a memory made no sense, & the things that would be obvious to trigger a memory didn't. But now I'm just being nit picky.
I liked the hero. I liked how he was protective of the heroine. He didn't let anyone bully her. But I got tired of the "I love her but can't be with her" junk.
With all that said... I still really liked the book. It was interesting, I wasn't bored. I liked all the characters. I feel it was written by a talented author & would read more.

It's a great start to a mystery and pulled me in

Threw the book across the room. No kidding. It's a great start to a mystery and pulled me in, but the writer needed to do more revisions and research. I had problems with the romance stuff being plugged in like it was written by a second writer who knew nothing about the story. As a former police officer, I had some problems with the hot shot FBI guy and the three days of not doing diddly, but I let it slide. Where the story lost me and prompted the throwing was when the hot shot FBI guy couldn't figure out what the vics phone number was when it had already been mentioned that she had a business. Seriously? WTF kind of FBI guy is he? I got a hundred pages and am still ticked off about it.

It Takes a Thief

Ok I will admit it, I wanted this book to have some romance going on between Angelina Carr and Nick Aston, but nope not that type of book at all. Which in a way I really liked. I got the unexpected, instead of what I normally read. Nice change of pace. Despite this not being a romantic novella, it was still an excellent book. The author manages to pack a big punch within these 63 pages.

The plot drew me into this story. There are twists and turns throughout that keep you trying to come up with scenarios in your mind to help out Angelina and Nick take down a small-time criminal and a mob boss at the same time without landing in jail themselves. I will say at the end of the book the author leaves it open that maybe in the future there will be some romantic ties between Angelina and Nick, so we shall wait and see.

Overall this was a quick easy one day read, that was enjoyable. I can easily recommend this book and will definitely be checking out some more titles from this author.

Having grown up in Wyoming, Kansas and New Mexico, a survivor of Texas and a veteran of Hollywood --where he worked in radio, television and films in addition to print--Mr. Williams has lived in Oregon for the past twenty years.

He has written for (among others) the Washington Post, the Los Angeles Times, the Kansas City Star, the Los Angeles Herald-Examiner (RIP), the Portland Oregonian, the Santa Fe Sun, New West magazine (RIP), the Eugene Register-Guard, the Orange County Register and the Los Angeles Free Press (RIP).

His blog (his vorpal sword) is frequently featured on Crooks and Liars' Mike's Blog Roundup, Salon's Blog Roundups (before the feature was discontinued), and has been cited in fora too numerous to mention. Veteran Journalist Treats Ayn Rand's Work With The Respect It Deserves

The full title of Hart William's book of connected essays, Ayn Nation Under God: A Rational Examination As To Why Ayn Rand Is Full Of It, indicates his intent and point of view quite well. The essays (most of which appeared in slightly different form on Williams' blog from 2005 to 2012) do not pretend to any faux 'objectivity'. But despite his generally negative opinion of Ayn Rand's work, her fans and followers will make a mistake if they dismiss Williams' ebook, available in Amazon Kindle format, as not worthy of their reading time and effort. For them, and for the non-fans of Rand--in and out of academia--many of whom have dismissed her work as unimportant, Williams provides a most valuable service by treating Rand with the respect she deserves as one of the most influential figures of mid-20th Century to early 21st Century American thought. Indeed, Williams adduces a great deal of evidence to show that Rand--founder of a philosophical school she called "Objectivism"--has become a revered figure and a major inspiration for the Republican Right (especially its more secular wing representing finance and banking) and the allied Libertarian movement, both of which cherish and feel bolstered by Rand's uber-individualist, anti-government, but pro-corporate outlook. Williams has carefully studied Rand's work and his "rational examination" focuses on her basic premises: her view of 'reason', which he finds inadequate, and her basic understanding of human nature, which he finds lacking, indeed monstrously so. His criticism seems to me--a student and advocate of Alfred Korzybski's non-aristotelian viewpoint--devastatingly apt.

Although Williams has not studied Alfred Korzybski's work, he has clearly been influenced by some of the ongoing non-aristotelian currents that Korzybski saw developing in the scientific, intellectual culture of his time, which he sought to systematize and enhance by means of the teachable system that he called "general semantics". (See Selections from Science and Sanity.) "Non-aristotelian" I should emphasize was not for Korzybski anti-Aristotle, not even anti aristotelian logic. Aristotle's logic, for example, may still remain useful--where it applies. But Korzybski did reject the essentialist structural assumptions or metaphysics which Aristotle's logic in particular embodies when interpreted, as Ayn Rand did, as the overarching basis for human 'rationality' and 'reason' rather than as a limited set of guidelines for some forms of discourse. In his first chapter (written especially for the book), Williams--who as a college philosophy major studied mathematical logic--gives his take on Rand's trumpeting of the aristotelian 'laws of thought' and 'pure logic' as the basis for 'reason'. In Atlas Shrugged, she entitled the three sections of the book "Non-Contradiction", "Either-Or", and "A is A". Williams writes that when he first saw her "A is A" years ago, he said "When?": "A is A sometimes, but other times it's not exactly A. In fact, when you say A, you are just specifying THIS A at THAT exact moment in time, which that A will never be again. But it's close enough for government work, or, in this case, anti-government work." Williams further discussion of aristotelian logic seems quite in keeping with Korzybski's take: overdependence on it by using it as a general orientation, as Rand and her followers do, leads to evaluational rigidity and inflexibility.

Williams' critique of Rand's view of human nature also appears quite devastating. Rand cut her heroes from a cartoonish mold where, just as with the fabled politician, they built with their own two hands the log cabin they were born in. She elevates to sacred doctrine an extreme individualism that takes little to no account of the social matrix upon which any individual human accomplishment is based. Perhaps Williams doesn't know much about Korzybski's characterization of humanity as the time-binding class of life (see Manhood of Humanity: The Science and Art of Human Engineering (Dodo Press), but throughout the book he demonstrates his implicit understanding of the time-binding character of humanity and its incompatibility with Rand's extreme version of individuality, embodied in the title of one of her books The Virtue of Selfishness (Signet). Rand erroneously embraces "[a]n almost universal human trait...the ability to discount the endless contributions of others to our thinking process, while magnifying our own 'original' thinking beyond all measure. This is the basis of the American mythos of the 'Self-made man.'..." Rand's extreme elevation of the virtue of selfishness has no place for altruism--at all, at all. According to Rand, Williams notes, "[o]nly when this awful, ridiculous moral notion of self-sacrifice and altruism is rejected will the thinkers/creators/Atlases be free to create. Until then, Galt [one of Rand's heros in Atlas Shrugged] says, they're out." Williams writes that on the contrary, "Man is a SOCIAL animal," "but Ayn Rand and her adherents insanely reject this fundamental truth. As a result, while a few have enriched themselves, our society is falling apart, and our infrastructure is rotting." Thus Rand's work provides the perfect theoretical basis for the current extreme view of individualism supported by 'tea-party' advocates, 'libertarian' think tanks, and the right-wing Republicans, among others. An example of the latter is former Republican Vice-Presidential candidate, Paul Ryan, a staunch right-wing Catholic, who during the campaign attempted to distance himself from the staunch atheist, Rand, he once admired and touted. But despite his new found love for St. Thomas Aquinas, Ryan still seems to be pushing the virtue of selfishness. Not very christian according to some christian's measures, but then again, as Williams points out, "nobody ever went broke providing millionaires with a rationalization for the morality of greed." At the moment, Congressman Ryan seems to be doing quite well.

The book's title, Ayn Nation Under God, might have been better titled Ayn Nation Under Galt, but then again maybe Hart Williams' title is appropriate if we understand Albert Ellis's affirmative answer to the question that was also the title of his book critiquing Rand, Is Objectivism a Religion? At any rate, Hart Williams' book provides a remarkably non-aristotelian look at what is unfortunately becoming (at least to me) Ayn Nation Under Rand. If you want to understand a great deal more about the polarizing belief system that seems to dominate the present political climate in the U.S., you can't do better than read Hart William's book. My summary and quotes don't do justice to his writing. He tenders his conclusions with a large portion of supporting detail served with verve and wit in a book of much greater value than its incredibly low price.

Is Ayn Rand's "greed is a virtue" the way we want to live?

I'm giving this four instead of five stars for two picayune reasons: 1) everyone has spill check, so why not use it? and 2) while I realize this is a series of essays, with a little effort much of the repetition could have been avoided. Sorry, but I can't suppress my inner Grammar Nazi.

The book shows how today's GOP congresscritters and their handlers are devotees of Ayn Rand's "greed is a virtue" philosophy, and whether consciously or not, their policies are much like that of the Spartan culture: the non-producers (e.g., the old and infirm) are parasites who are best left out in the elements to perish. This philosophy is clearly shown by the unwillingness to raise taxes on the wealthy while at the same time insisting that "entitlements" such as Social Security and Medicare must be privatized, cut back, and otherwise drastically changed in order to "save" our society. A must read, imo, for those who haven't yet thought through their libertarian leanings, and others who may still think Ayn Rand was "one of the great philosophers of our time," or worse, that her thinking was so far "out there" that we need not take her seriously.

Take this seriously, especially on this inauguration day as we stand at the edge of the "fiscal cliff."

Redefining The Word "Deconstruct"
This book is a fine example of an American writer's innate understanding of the English language. American English. This is a uniquely American story, with an ironic foreign twist. Ayn Rand, (an immigrant from the USSR) has recently become an increasingly popular American icon in right wing, tea party politics for a concept so anethetical to our way of life as to be almost laughable, if it wasn't so dangerously insidious.
From the book:
"We are so immersed in the myth of our separateness, our individuality, that we never see the vast machineries of a global civilization that allows us our dream of sovereign glory. I am a rock! I am an Island! (see Paul Simon for the rest of it.)
Rand's philosophy of "Objectivism" (basically an "I've got mine, the individual is everything, selfishness is a virtue" look at the world) is goofy enough (if I have to spell it out for you, man is a SOCIAL animal). The butcher and the baker would not have been able to do their jobs if it wasn't for the candlestick maker, not to mention the many apprentices needed in all of those fields.
Cooperation is paramount for any society AND individual to succeed. When our current president in his bid for reelection said "You didn't build that" (so grossly taken out of context) what he meant was that without the roads and bridges and all the other help along the way, you could not have succeeded. It's blatantly simple. Without cooperation, society cannot succeed.

Very well defined, Mr. Williams!
The real danger here is that a lot of these tea party types that have embraced this "Objectivism" have also pushed evangelical Christianity along with it. Vice presidential candidate Paul Ryan was caught doing that very thing! Being a Catholic, he proclaimed to be a devotee of Ayn Rand's philosophy until someone pointed out that, "Uuh, Paul, Rand was an ATHEIST!", which caused him to embrace St. Thomas Aquinas as his new "patron saint" (nice try, Paul)
I highly recommend this excellent read, for it puts to rest any doubts you might have regarding the melding of a brutal, absurdist philosophy with what I personally regard as a fairy tale (as George Carlin so brilliantly put it- "Tell people there's an invisible man in the sky who created the universe, and the vast majority will believe you. Tell them the paint is wet and they have to touch it to make sure") i'll leave you with this quote from the book:
"There is, finally, something monstrous and inhumane about a philosophy of `individualism' that depends on the rejection of the individualism of others as a prerequisite for affirming one's own. Sorry, but not as advertised...

After reading the book and the existing reviews, I can only think the author and most of the existing reviewers really have little or no idea what computer programming is all about.
I don't usually write negative reviews, but just couldn't let this one go.

With a title of "How to computer program" I should have known there would be issues, because I can't imagine anyone that actually knows how, that would state it quite that way. More correctly, it should be something more like "How to learn computer programming" or "How to program computers". Either way, it doesn't matter, because the book doesn't actually provide any real information about how to learn computer programming. Suggesting that someone play with open source applications isn't how to learn to program. There are some fundamental concepts that must be learned first, and knowing the particular syntax rules for the language are important before poking about. Starting out by poking at existing open source applications will more likely discourage a person from learning about programming than to encourage them to learn.

Yes, there are some general statements about various languages and perhaps a bit about the need for programmers, but it reads like a loosely collected series of short articles, or a bunch of first paragraphs spun from Wikipedia. The author throws out a list of words that will have absolutely no meaning for a non-programmer, does nothing to explain the descriptions of each language provided, or why the differences may be significant. For example, there is no information provided about the difference between an interpreted scripting language and a compiled language, nor what any of the other buzzwords mean. The concept of a compiler wasn't even brought up.

It was also somewhat repetitive, as about half of the information in Chapter 5 "The 10 programming languages you should learn right now" (PHP, C#, Ajax, JavaScript, Perl, C, ruby, Java, Python, VB.net) was essentially repeated in Chapter 10 "The most popular programming languages to learn" (C, Java, PHP, Javascript).

I seriously doubt the author has the slightest idea how to program in any of the languages he suggests. The book has numerous conceptual errors. Making a sweeping statement like "Java is one of the fastest growing languages and almost every programming job will require that a person know how to use it." is just wrong. I know a bunch of professional programmers that make a nice living without using Java at all, and can't recall the last time I needed to use it, personally or professionally. Which language is used for a programming job is dependent on several factors, not the least of which is what is the most appropriate for the application, or the tools available for the target platform.

If you want a really quick read without any substantive information, this book may be your cup of tea, but I wouldn't expect anyone even slightly interested in programming to get much out of it.

The only reason I gave it 2 stars was because the author tried, and he had a reasonable set of topics. Unfortunately, there wasn't more than a sentence or two about any topic. With a different title and some real information beyond a sentence or two for each topic, it could be turned into a pretty decent book. However, if expanded, it needs to be proofread by someone that knows computer programming to avoid the sort of problems mentioned above.

Syntax Error!

The awkward-sounding title of this book is also a clue that the contents are going to miss the mark as well. This book is not going to teach you how to program a computer.

If this ebook were a computer program, it would crash. There are many misspellings, grammar errors, punctuation errors, and formatting errors; if the author is indeed a programmer, his code must need a lot of debugging. The choice of using greyed fonts in the chapter and section headings make the headings difficult to read on an eInk reader. Quality assurance testing, anyone? QA testing is a must in the world of software development and is a very good thing to do when publishing an ebook too. Again, if the author is a programmer, he should have been aware of this.

The first third of the book is more of an explanation of why it might be a good thing to learn how to "computer program." A lot of the information is repetitive and appears in two and sometimes three sections of the book, sometimes contradicting what has been written elsewhere. Unfortunately a great deal of the information and suggestions are misleading and just plain wrong. Some examples:

From Chapter 1 - "What is Computer Programming?" in the section entitled "Programming Language"
the author writes

"When being introduced to programming the two most common languages that are used are Java and Logo. Logo has been around since the seventies and is used in educational settings more than any other programming language."

Putting aside that jumping directly into Java as a first language is a mistake for a beginner, the Logo language certainly is not a commonly used first language these days. It was originally used over 30 years ago in elementary schools for children to manipulate simple graphics. It was not taught then or now as a introductory programming language for students in a computer science or information systems learning environment. Spending time learning this unstructured, limited use language would not benefit someone planning on becoming a programmer with commercially marketable skills.

From Chapter 5 - "The 10 Programming Languages You Should Learn Right Now" the ten languages listed are all web-based except C. The author never bothers to explain the technical terminology he uses to describe these languages, terms such as "open-source," "interpretive," "object oriented," "cross-platform," and "CGI." There is no glossary in the book to help a beginner decipher any of these and similar terms used. That aside, the suggested list of languages would limit the student to doing web-based programming. I also disagree with his contention that Java should be the first programming language used. More on this later.

From Chapter 9 - "Where to Find Jobs as a Computer Programmers[sic]" contains a lot of information about where the author believes there are jobs, claiming that "there is still a high demand for programmers." There is no mention anywhere about the reality of the situation with off-shore outsourcing of programming jobs or the H1B visa. I won't get into the politics of it in this review, but anyone interested can do searches to find out more about these issues and how they affect technical jobs. I do have to roll my eyes at statements such as "Almost every piece of equipment in a medical setting is not programmed to perform its duties."

From Chapter 11 - "How Long Will It Take to Train & Ongoing Education" he writes

"Adding new programming languages to your resume is a great way to increase your chances of getting a job. There are hundreds and possible thousands of programming languages out there and learning as many as possible is recommended."

Before anyone tries to learn a few dozen programming languages you should know that it's not only the knowledge of a language which will get you hired, but commercial experience in *using* that language, often on a specific operating system or hardware suite and even in a specific industry.

In spite of what the author recommends, you can't just teach yourself a few programming languages and hope to get hired. Nor will a certificate from an online school get you past the hiring manager. You need talent, ability, proper training, and then experience to build a career in the technical field these days. Proper training means hands-on study from a certified community college, school, or university. You will also need a good grounding in areas other than just coding such as data structures, computer architecture, design principles, and databases.

If you do want to learn something about programming without committing to paying a lot in tuition and attending classes, I'd recommend that you start with simple HTML programming. All you need to get started are a text editor (such as WordPad or KWrite) and a web browser. A introductory book in HTML would be helpful in getting familiar with the structure of the language and standards. Build and test a few web pages to see if you enjoy the challenge of writing and debugging code. Once you're comfortable with that environment, add in a new element such as Cascading Style Sheets (CSS) to your HTML, then later add in Javascript or PHP. If you're still interested after all of that work and study, try your hand at a compiled language such as C and more complex programs.

Who am I to make recommendations? Someone who has been there and done that over thirty years ago and has worked in the software development field at all levels from programmer to project manager.

If you decide to go the route of learning to program computers, I wish you the best of luck. But you won't be successful if you try to do so by following the recommendations in this ebook.

Title Misrepresents Content...Book Has Next to No Useful Information

The only review that I can agree with in the reviews I've read is the one by R. Frazier (Volcano, HI). The rest of the reviewers seem to either, A. Be jaded for one reason or another or B. Didn't actually read this book. The book could have honestly been 6 or 7 pages and would have covered all the content.

As the aforementioned reviewer stated, this book is EXTREMELY REPETITIVE. I actually had to go back to make sure I didn't accidentally go backwards on my Kindle because the information is almost verbatim the same. Some topics are repeated 3 and 4 times. Now, I cannot complain about the cost because I downloaded this book when it was listed at 0.00 and I will say that it isn't even worth that. Do not spend any money on this book. Most of the information within is commmon sense and except for the repetitive laundry lists, all the content is so general that you learn literally nothing about anything regarding Computer Programming.

It does not contain a lick of "How to Computer Program". Not one bit. It's all superficial information that is mentioned by the other reviewers including who can benefit from being a computer programmer, what industries need computer programming, what languages are within the realm of computer programming etc. Outside of that, you dont' actually learn anything about the subject itself.

Please, do not buy this book if you value your time and money. This book is a ploy to get a few bucks from unsuspecting people who wish to actually learn something about the subject.
