Loved It!
By DevoGirl
Jason and Tasha have been best friends since they were kids, even though Jason is kind of a nerd, and Tasha is a little teenage hottie. They go their separate ways in college, then reconnect as adults in New York. Somehow, without quite realizing how it happened, Tasha finds herself still single at 32, wanting to settle down, unable to find the right guy. Someone like Jason, but they're just friends. And he doesn't even think of her like that, right?

This book is so much fun to read. The writing is snappy and funny, and the romance goes down as sweet as candy, filled with pop culture references. In between the chapters are clever charts that poke fun at the chick-lit genre.

Tasha and Jason are great characters--flawed but loveable and believable. Even though the action takes place when they are adults, there are lots of flashbacks to their childhood and teen years. I really liked that Tasha slept around a lot but there's no slut-shaming. She has a slightly embarrassing past, but it's not that big a deal. So refreshing after reading so many prudish romances.

Jason's disability is also handled really well. A paraplegic from a car accident when he was 5, it's not that big a deal to him or to Tasha, but the book does a good job of showing how he's adjusted and how people react to him. And the author doesn't cheat on the details. It's very realistic without being a huge downer. The wheelchair is part of who he is, but it doesn't define him.

Also be sure to check out "The Best Friend" also by Annabelle Costa, in the anthology Paradox edited by Lee Nilsen.

Boy Next Door
By princess bookie
My Thoughts: It's been quite a while since I read a book that wasn't YA. I have a few others on my TBR pile as well but I just don't pick them up as much.

We are introduced to Tasha who is a pretty laid back girl but also had quite the teenage years. She was a bit of a party girl and liked to have fun. She also had a next door neighbor named Jason. They were friends since they were kids. Jason was in a wheelchair most of his life and Tasha got used to being friends with someone like him. Yes, he couldn't do everything she could but they spent plenty of time doing things they both enjoyed together. They go their separate ways when they become adults.

They grow up and reconnect and become best friends again. Tasha has a boyfriend usually and Jason has his fair share of relationships. Heck, at one time Jason is thinking about getting married and another time Tasha is engaged.

These two were such great characters. I loved both of them, and I saw myself falling for Jason, despite the things about him we couldn't control. I never once felt sorry for him, I just felt for him. He was funny and he could be serious and really be there for you.

Of course, I wanted Jason and Tasha to end up together, who wouldn't? Open your eyes Tasha and realize he's not just the boy next door.

This one had me laughing out loud numerous times and at times I wanted to yell.

The Boy Next Door was an enjoyable read, I liked it a lot more than I originally thought I would going in.

Overall: Really enjoyed it. I hadn't heard much about this one before I had it recommended to me. It hasn't gotten much publicity yet but it was quite the catch.

Cover: Like it but I generally don't like the cartoonish covers for some reason.

What I'd Give It: 4/5 Cupcakes

A sweet hero, a selfish heroine, and a one-sided love/romance
By S
One of the sweetest heroes ever! Hands down. Brave, kind, thoughtful, caring, and so crazy in love with the heroine. I loved this hero, Jason, one of the most lovable heroes I've ever read, and what kills me is that I ended this book with the feeling that this romance was one-sided. No way did this sweetheart of a guy deserve this jellyfish of a woman. Yes, I know he's a fictional hero, but that's why we read romance: to believe and to feel the love, to become involved with the characters, to care about them, and I, in no way, felt that this heroine loved Jason as much as he loved her. This heroine is so incredibly selfish that I don't know if she could love anyone as much as she loves herself.

Usually, when I read a book with a flawed character, I'm thinking, okay, let the redeeming begin; convince me that you are worthy of being the heroine. Make me care about you. I did not get to that point with Tasha. She was not redeemed to me, and I fully believe that SHE is unworthy of Jason. She frustrated me to no end. She is so self-centered, so consumed by looks and appearances, so entitled and hung up on herself. I mean, in her head the song I Feel Pretty must surely follow her around, like the theme song to her life. And she actually thinks to herself that if she were to marry Jason that people at the wedding would be looking at him, in his wheelchair, and would be feeling sorry for her. Yeah, they'd be feeling sorry for her, but because she's a superficial prat.

I loved the friends-to-lovers theme here, and I loved the hero and how the author wrote him as not perfect or built or drop-dead sexy, but she let me down with this heroine. I just failed to connect to the heroine and could not see her as someone worthy of such a sweet and special hero. This heroine soured the romance for me. She never became likable to me, and this really affected my overall enjoyment of the story. Loved the hero, hated the heroine, and this made the romance feel one-sided and half-hearted to me.
